Thanks Gary for the tip. When I use auto fuel the brown stains will come
off using more auto gas on a rag and some heavy duty rubbing. The perma
nent stains are from the blue dye in 100LL aviation fuel. This stuff is
worse the blueberry juice on a white tablecloth. Once it is there you a
re screwed. I also agree that rubbing compound will probably remove the
blue stains but when Imron cures it creates a skin kinda like pudding ge
ts. This skin is the UV protection and rubbing compound will remove it,
thus making the paint less durable...

Thanks for taking the time to check your wings. So what would everyone recommend
for a possible fix? Should I try and remake the entire root rib? Should
I cut off the rear flange on the root rib and then rivet on a new flange so I
can set the rib length? Other ideas?

I am looking at a 701 that is for sale. It is a nice looking plane but 2
years ago it had a real hard landing. The landing gear had to be
replaced.
What and where should I be looking for to make sure that the structure
has not been damaged ? I think that the plane has gone through 2 or 3
annuals since then, so I am hoping that is a good sign.
Thanks.

Martin,
Glad you found the fuel starvation problem. My take on the bulkhead hole is
that you could probably do it, possibly hinging a door, but why not put som
e
reinforcement in the bulkhead first? I put a BRS chute on this bulkhead. I
needed to strengthen it first and could show you how I did it. Write
directly to me if you want a picture of what I did.

Martin, use 1/8" lexan instead of plexaglass or any other plastic.
Lexan is extremely strong, somewhat flexible, and even bullet proof
depending on thickness. Use double sided automotive tape to attach it
with nuts and bolts in the four corners. Plexaglass is brittle, will
break and has no give. I think you will be actually gaining strength
with lexan, however, it is a little heavier.
Take care, Larry N1345L
PS, glad you like the belly pod.

Sounds like another good reason to paint my wings blue. I was planning on
blue anyway, because I wanted a dark color to help melt frost and/or ice on
cold mornings--not an uncommon problem in Montana. But I think this seals
the deal.

Larry,
thanks for your reply and for all the ideas you shared with me that made my 701
better. The pod is great see:
http://picasaweb.google.com/mwpicard/PicardZenithCH701#
You made it really well and even fitted it to your plane so that it went on mine
without and changes. thanks! I havent actually put anything in it yet but I
have flown around with it on heaps. You lose about 3mph at cruise speed but dont
seem to lose any STOLness. I hope others know that you are selling these
because they are definitely worth it - great additions to the plane for long
trips.
cheers,
Martin

Have any of you 801 builders put big tundra tires on your airplane? You
would have to put a huge fork on the nose gear, I would think. Kind of
awkward on a tri-gear, but I wonder if anybody's done it.

This message is in reply to several messages on this topic.
During the last 13 years I have gone from the original Zenair large nose
tank with two wing tanks, to removing the nose tank and just keeping the
two wing tanks, to the present system with two wing tanks and a
collector behind the baggage compartment.
The biggest problem with the nose tank was the nose heavy c of g
(especially on floats) and the requirement to have the battery at the
extreme rear. The problem of uneven feeding was controlled with valves
at the wing roots and a main shut-off valve at the IP sub panel. The
problem with just the wing tanks was the inability to safely use all the
wing fuel without risking fuel starvation.
The addition of the 8 litter collector with a sight gauge and low level
warning light allows me to safely drain all the available fuel from the
wing tanks and safely land with as little as 4-6 litters of useable
fuel.
The other advantage is that my battery is now in the engine compartment
saving me 12 feet of high amperage cable running the length of the a/c
and the stator now gets full battery voltage.
Save weight in cable and I don't have to carry a lot of wing fuel that
can't safely be used.
This works for me.
Regards
Carl
