Subject: | Carb Air Temp Sensor installation |
List:
I sent the below email to Jabiru AU last week but have not received a
reply. Does anyone have any idea on how you install the Carb Air Temp
Sensor on a Jabiru 3300?
"Jabiru:
I have recently hung 3300 # 1543 on my Zenair 701 and would like to
install a Carb Air Temp sensor which goes to my Grand Rapids Sport
Engine Information System. Pete of USJabiru did not know how to do it
and Grand Rapids seem to be devoid of ideas on how to do so.
An instruction that came with the probe indicated "Most carburetor
housings will be pre-drilled and tapped, with a lead or brass screw
filling the hole. If no hole exists, it will be necessary to drill
and tap one". An accompanying illustration of a Mavel Schebler Type
MA4 carb for a 6 cylinder engine indicates the tapped hole should be
1/4 X 28.
Any information you can provide would be sincerely appreciated."
Ideas and comments are solicited and would be very much appreciated.

Stan,
Never even seen a Jab engine. Having such credendials prompts me to offer this:
DO NOT drill any holes in your carb!
If there is a rubber hose, gasket of sufficient thickness, or some other method
of inserting the probe, just for testing at first, then by all means use that
method before you drill a hole in the carb.
Surely some knowledgeable fellow will offer a suitable answer to your question,
but I'd back off from the drilling until the precise location of this hole is
known.
Typical carb just has too many secret passages cast/machined into it to be hasty.
Besides, rubber hoses and gaskets are relatively cheap; carbs are not.

I am planning on flying my 701 from Central Ohio to Minneapolis, MN. My
Rotax 912ULS prefers 91 octane mogas and I have found several airports
along my route that sell 91 mogas. If the winds are favorable there and
back (fat chance!) I would be able to make it with two fuel stops, but I
would like several alternatives. I can purchase 91 mogas near Chicago at
Cushing Field (0C8) and near Minneapolis at Stanton Airfield (KSYN). I
would like to add a fuel stop between Columbus (KOSU) and Cushing and one
between Cushing and KSYN. Any of you Rotax flyers in those areas know of
a field with 91 mogas?

:D I now am a 701 owner. Flew it over 200 miles home.
As it is, it will not carry 2 adults. propped wrong) short 300 rpm on take off
and climb out. And uses fuel from the right tank not the left, found out if you
want them to run even then turn one off until the other catches up. (just like
a Cherokee) All in all awesome aircraft! Already got 5 hours in it.
Thanks for your commits.

Jeff,
I use 91 octane in my 912ULS when I can, but Rotax says its OK to use 100LL
with more frequent oil and plug changes. Since I like to go X-country and
since few airports have 91 Octane, I add TCP to keep the lead from gunking
up the cylinders (see
http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/appages/alcortcp.php).
