Bob, Depending on several variables, raw materials cost could be approximately 3 0-40% of the current 701 kit price.- I'm in the Aviation Capital so I hav e no issues finding aircraft grade materials, but Yarde Metal online is a g ood resource if you need have it shipped in.- No, disappointingly the pla ns do not include material quantites, this is left up to the builder to det ermine.- If your debating of whether or not to scratchbuild, the DVD is p riceless overview of what you could anticipate. do not archive Art Olechowski 750 Plans/701 Rudder --- On Thu, 10/16/08, Bob Collins <bobcollins42@gmail.com> wrote: From: Bob Collins <bobcollins42@gmail.com> Subject: Zenith701801-List: Kit or Scratch? <bobcollins42@gmail.com> I have a question for everyone, but especially those of you like Chris Lewis who are building from plans (scratch building). What do you think the cost comparison is between the raw materials and Zenith's kit? My workshop instructor felt that there might be little or no savings over buying the kit. Considering my knowledge of how business works, this might be true. Again, for the scratch builders, where are you buying your metal? Are you able to find it locally or do you have to order it from places such are Aircraft Spruce or Wicks? Do the plans recommend the size and quantity of raw stock to buy? Third question. For those of you who have viewed it, what do you think of the "Scratch Building Basics for Metal Aircraft" DVD from HomebuiltHELP.com? Thanks, Bob Collins Sunnyvale CA USA CH750 (well, sitting here with a fine new 701/750 rudder)

Art and Bob CH701.com under Builders Resources has a couple of good spreadsheets listing all or maybe 99.99% of the materials It is user supplied. Randall J Hebert Do Not Archive Bob, No, disappointingly the plans do not include material quantites, this is left up to the builder to determine.

Randall, You absolutely correct, and I'm aware of them but they don't (currently) wo rk for scratching the 750, only the 701.- Ideally, Zenith should include a list of raw materials as part of the plans since they know exact quantiti es, of course you would have to add in waste and rework percentages of your own.- Just seems weird that they don't list quantities since its already a known for them. Listers, Some time ago, several owners of CH701 described how they warmed the engine before starting it in cold weather. I failed to save any of these e-mails. I would appreciate recommendations for my application. I have CH701 with Rotax 912ULS waiting in the hanger. I have 120 volt power available. Many thanks, Ken N701LK Pikeville, NC do not archive

Ken, Rotax says you need to build the oil temps up to 120-degrees before running the engine fast. The exact specs are in the Rotax manual. I know truckers who use special heating blankets and even talked with a guy who said he builds a fire under his engine to get it going on cold days in Alaska. Since I live in California I never had to pre-heat the engine so I can't recommend any devices. It takes about 10 minutes idling for the oil to get to 120-degrees on my 912ULS. I purchased an oil bypass thermostat system to speed this up, but decided not to install it because it would add a lot of extra piping with extra potential for oil system failure (anyone want to buy it?). Sorry to hear about the end of the program, it was a very good idea. Still, the kids who participated are much better off for the experience. I doubt that many kids get to help build something of this magnitude. Please tell everyone involved that I applaud there efforts and vision. From: "ndibiase" <ndibiase2@alice.it>
i'd like to ask two questions to list expertise. Why on Ch701 it was used a series 6 laminar profile (NACA 650-18) in a low speed , draggy context ? Why is there a new stop tab that hardly limit elevator down travel with resultant not too much nose down authority in same flight envelope points. thanks in advance nicola di biase Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p 9394#209394

Thank you Kevin, I agree with you whole heartily. That is why we are going to try it again! My wife Just started a Non-profit for young girls. She deals with "girl issues" like positive self esteem and stuff like that. We plan to help the girls build a 601 that was started by the CKJH kids. It is a really good cause and I hope it goes well. Her website is www.ourbeautiywithin.org if you are interested. I hope to teach the kids some cool stuff like welding, machine work & and of coarse sheet metal fabrication. If they learn how to use tools and think like problem solvers they will be well ahead the rest of their pier groups. Anyway, take care, Brady -------- Brady McCormick Poulsbo, WA www.magnificentmachine.com Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p 9408#209408

    (1) I have no idea about the choice of wing airfoil however it was chosen by a professional designer who also chose the Robin HR200 and 2000 series structures and mine flys OK (2) The recommended elevator limits I understand only apply to CH601XL, and the explanation given is to prevent wing overload under certain piloting conditions. This type of limitation is often incorporated to aircraft when other changes such as weight increase can lead to the original setup becoming marginal. Cessna did this to the 152 and 172 max. flap settings (as does Zenair for the rev-4 and later CH701) and the C177 had elevator slots added, there was nothing bad about any of these planes just some pilots needed more margin.
