Fellow enthusiasts, I have for some time been reading, absorbing and learin
g from=C2- my esteemed colleagues. I am posting a question for the first
time. My 701 has an ASI which underreads by=C2-approximately 12 knots. Bo
th the Pitot and Static vent are sited 2/3 up the pilot side leading wing s
trut. I know there was some discussion on how to resolve, but for the life
of me cannot find the information, so beggin your patience I wonder if smeo
ne will be kind enough to remind me how to overcome this underread problem.
Thanks for your patience

Thanks Les. I already posted a copy on the Rotax list. Nothing there yet.
Interesting point you brought up though. I only joined one group ever, that was
the original Zenith list. I dint join any others but I can post to all with the
same Log on.

Hi Ric. I have pretty well the same problem. I have a Dynon 180 EFIS
with the dual pitot tube AOA and my airspeed reads about 8 knots slow.
My dual static source is on the right and left sides of the fuselage at
the front of the cabin. I've tried rezeroing the ASI as per Dynon's
instruction but haven't noted any change.
When I'm flying along I get the impression that the pitot tube is not
exactly parallell to the horizon, but is a bit "nose up" with reference
to the horizon. I've gone over the tubing itself and haven't found any
kinked or otherwise obstructed areas.
Wonder if your ASI is a conventional round gauge or a Dynon?

Hi Vic,
This is an old solution to the Arctic cold I found while living in Alaska. Its
not new, I just copied other pilots that had to spend nights at strips with no
power. They would use old Plumbers torches. The ones used in the 20s and 30s.
I found mine in a second hand store. They will burn anything, auto gas, av-gas,
Jet fuel etc. They even start frozen wood for a camp fire when its 40 below.
Free up frozen brakes and free up frozen skies if youre careful. You will also
need a three or four foot piece of exhaust tubing so you can leave the torch
on the ground and run the exhaust pipe up the engine cowling from the bottom
and worm up the engine compartment. It gets everything, engine, cylinders, oil
system and so on. If you have an engine blanket it warms up even faster. You
can even worm up the cabin, just stick the pipe in the door for a few minutes.
Its a very useful survival tool for the North Country.

Ric,
The problem is with the static line not the pitot. Initially my single
static line ended inside the leading edge of the wing at about the same
position that you have yours. We both found out that this does not work. I
found that my error increased with the angles of attack. It was really
upsetting to see a zero airspeed indication just before touch-down when I
was shooting STOL landings. I think this occurred because there is an
opening under the leading edge of the wing at the forward attachment point
that probably scoops up air at high angles of attack that was picked up by
the static line.
So... I experimented with the position of the static line, I tried ending it
inside the cabin but it still read low. Then I put the endings outside each
side of the cabin below the doors (better but still off). Finally I looked
at what others has done and moved the two endings about two feet behind the
doors just under the baggage compartment outside the cabin. The results now
are in sync with the GPS at any airspeed.

All,
Here is a couple of pictures I took of 701ZB, when I was out in Quality Sports
in Cloverdale, CA.
The pictures show his just a little bit behind the baggage rivet line. Can not
remember the gentleman's name, but he did point the static port out to me and
said he has good luck with it. He flies with a Flightdeck D-180 (Dynon)
