Subject: | 701 : difference between "old" & new model ? |
Hello
I 'm interested to buy a 701 , already built (airframe & wings) but not finished.
a picture of it is attached.
it's a kit aged about 10 / 12 years (I think so ?) and my question is :
are there important aerodynamics changes with the new 701 models ?
will that change something with its performance ?
thank you !
dominique

I dont think there is any aerodynamic changes from the earlier model, the max.
weight is limited to 960 lbs and there are more restrictions on engine type and
weight. The rev-4 plans had a lot of changes to the wing spars and attach points
to enable a weight increase to 1100 lbs so the more favoured engines like
912S could be used more fully. Flap travel is now restricted to 16 deg as the
heavier models dont need as much.
There are lots of the lighter ones flying well on the 80hp Rotax or less, so it
will come down to what mission you have, how much stuff you need to install and
what the crew weights are.

Unfortunately the plane was assembled without any wiring.
The Wings aren't too bad any ideas on the tail?

I am in Poulsbo, WA.
Stop by for the 10 cent tour.
I can show you 2 flying 701s and at least 3 others well in progress.
I might even be able to get you a flight in one.

Hey Brady,
Thanks for the invite. It looks like you are around 160miles from Portland. Quite
a trip for 1 day, (approx 7 hrs. driving)
Is this about right for the driving time. (round trip)
Keith

I think so, but the invitation stands.
Might be a good stop over point If you were planing to hit Seattle.

I am interested in learning what others have done with the metal to metal contact.
It seems to me this design will wear fast and not be very smooth.

There should be no metal to metal, the strut rides in a nylon block bearing.
How old are your plans?

I think it is a ball bearing unit.

The bearing that the strut rides in is Nylon.
I understood that to be the bearing he was talking about.
The Nose Wheel bearing is a ball bearing.
I think he said "nose wheel strut" bearing.

yes a nylon block , thats what I have seen. My drawings are dated 09/01. Do the
block specs include the "gear extended self centering ramps? Are drawings available
for the nylon version? Thanks for the help.

The attached photo is actually from an HD (Larry McFarland's?) but the
design on my 701 looks the same and I'll be adding the nylon. Basically add
nylon plates with V notches inside and parallel to the aluminum angle.

Even the latest plans (7-L-1 dated 04/2006) show the V notch as bare
aluminum (7F8-6 dated 06/2005). I sent a picture in another message showing
how to add nylon V notches.
