Dear Listers, The percentage of people making a Contribution to support the Lists this year is currently lagging behind last year by approximately 21%! I'm hoping that everyone is just waiting until the last minute to show their support... ;-) Please remember that it is solely your direct Contributions that keep these Lists up and running and most importantly - AD FREE! If the members don't want to support the Lists directly, then I will likely have to start adding advertisements to offset the costs of running the Lists. But I *really* don't want to have to start doing that. I really like the non-commercial atmosphere here and I think that a lot of the members appreciate that too. Please take a moment to make a Contribution today in support of the continued ad-free operation of all these Lists: http://www.matronics.com/contribution I want to send out a word of appreciation to all of the members that have already made their generous Contribution to support the Lists! Thank you! Matt Dralle Email List Administrator

Does anyone have good pictures showing what this is? Some have commented that it is ugly, but the best I can tell from the poor pictures on the Zenith site is that it has a removable bar in the front and a cradle in the back that is also removable. From the comments I've read I don't want it for common storage, but for ground transport. I helped my buddy trailer his Challenger to the airport a few months ago. I'll tell ya that was a long slow trip worrying about the wings tied down, ad padded with every cushion and pillow from the house. Now ft his wings had folded it would not have been a big deal at all. I started the wing rib router cutting template yesterday and so I'm about to the point of deciding and the folding wing. do not archive List, I bought the 'folding wing option' with my kit. Picked up the complete kit at ZAC. When I got home and looked at what is involved in 'folding' the wings I did not use it. Here's why: You are actually REMOVING the wings, not 'folding' them! This means wings, struts, fuel lines, wiring for fuel senders, wiring for marker lights, pitot tube, controls, missile launchers, and anything else hanging out there must be un-attached. At least two people are required. Possibly a third person to support the still-attached wing while you work on removing or mounting the other. Also, there is the problem of the sheet metal covering the gap between the wings and fuselage. After you build and mount the wings the first time you may decide it isn't worth the effort. It will take a considerable amount of time to re-assemble the airplane once you get to an airport. Everything will require proper torque, etc. The flaperons will be hanging loose while you are hauling....now what? If the trailing edge is 'down' you'll have to support the wing high enough so they don't touch the trailer floor. If you remove the flaperons, you'll just have more to re-assemble later. And finally, take a good look at the 'sliding pipe' arrangement....you want to fly with wings attached this way?? If you drop a wing and do even slight damage, do you fly it? My guess is that there are very few of this option in actual use. The 701 is a good airplane, but the wings need to stay on. Okay....that's my comment. Since the List was split we've not had any rip-roaring flames, so here's the opportunity.... Regards to all, Zed/701/R912/90%/etc

Zed, no argument here. But an explanation of expectations. The folding wing option was designed for the older version of the 701, when the plane had all it's fuel in the cabin and none in the wing. Also, note that the folding wing option was intended for transportation and extended storage use. It's intention is not suited for daily flying use. I have used the folding wing option several times, I do not recommend it as an option unless the person wants it for seasonal storage. However on www.ch701.com you will find a wing stand in the homemade tools section. I prefer to use this method for storage and transport of the 701 wings. do not archive Jon, that sure is a nice hangar (portable) for the yellow 701 on floats! Looks like there may be a sufficient number of people available to do the fold/un-fold operation. Sure hope I didn't start the flames. Zed

This is not a for sale forum, but I bought a kit from a guy who hadn't started it and when I got finished I had a bag or nuts and bolts left over and a strange looking aircraft telescopic tubing that I thought must have been accidently included in the kit. I contacted Zenith with pictures and they said that was the folding wing kit. When I opened the bag of bolts and small fittings I noticed then that it was labelled. I had the plane already flying so didn't bother with the retrofit as the plane will always be in my hangar. I never use the folding wing on the kitfox either, but for a folding wing system, I thnk the kitfox is better than the Zenith! If anybody wants the kit for shipping and a very small fee to cover packing it up and driving to the UPS place, contact bobkat@btinet.net It'll only collect dust here. I also put Grove gear on N701ND a month ago to have the brake lines out of sight (also have it on my Kitfox ) so have a spring aluminum gear here, too. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Zed Smith" <zsmith3rd@earthlink.net> Sent: Thursday, November 20, 2008 1:51 PM Subject: Zenith701801-List: More Folding Wings!! > <zsmith3rd@earthlink.net> > > do not archive > > Jon, that sure is a nice hangar (portable) for the yellow 701 on floats! > Looks like there may be a sufficient number of people available to do the > fold/un-fold operation. > > Sure hope I didn't start the flames. > > Zed > > >

Sure hope I didn't start the flames. There was a boatload of helpers! Note below the dockworkers... but I guess they didnt do the folding. I will try to followup with a story about the effort required to fold/unfold from this guy that has personal experience... I am quite curious also. This 701 pilot is from New Caledonia... now I had to get out my globe to locate that country! The newsletter went to the printer today so by Turkey-day weekend they should be heading out the door... and this issue will include a DVD of contributed video segments from 601/701/801 builders and pilots ! Even I am excited!

    Subject: Plexiglass Scratch Repair...
Dear Listers, During the fitting of the Plexiglass canopy on my RV-8, I managed to put some pretty disheartening scratches in the windscreen section. You can see from the pictures that they looked pretty bad. A call to Van's revealed that a replacement canopy would be $640 + $250 shipping to California! Ack. So what to do... A bit of surfing and I found this "Scratch Off" windshield repair kit for $35 on the Aircraft Spruce web site: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/cspages/scratchoff.php Frankly, it just seemed too good to be true. Nothing for $35 could be that "magic" I thought, but what did I have to lose at this point.... Well, the kit arrived yesterday and I decided to give it a try tonight. In a word: WOW! In about 2 hours the windscreen looked as good as new - no kidding - AS GOOD AS NEW! The pictures really don't do the repair justice. It looks better in person. There are basically two sponges in the kit with four decreasingly porous pastes. You just put some of the first paste on the sponge and buff it in with a drill at 1200 RPM or less. Then you wash everything down good including the sponge and windshield with warm water. Then you use the next finer paste and repeat the process. Etc, etc, until you've used the 4th paste that is kind of like car wax. Frankly, the scratches were gone after the first application of paste - I started at #2 based on the instructions and the "observed severity" of the scratch depth. So, the bottom line is, if you've got scuffs or mild scratches in your Plexiglass buy this repair kit. It works! Matt Dralle RV-8 #82880

Tracy, Zenith says Gross is 1100# on my plans, but I have flown my 701 at a 1300# gross by degrading "G"s to +5Gs and -2.5Gs. On page 7-G-3 of my plans, Zenith says Vf (max with flaps) is 60-mph, Va (maneuvering) is 85-mph and Vne (never exceed) is 110-mph. However, my flaps can be extended 5, 10, 15, or 20 degrees and I fly with 5-degrees at 70-mph to keep the nose down so I can see over the cowling when slow-flying. Once I forgot to raise the flaps and went 80-mph with 15-degrees extended for about 1/2 hour without any apparent damage. Hi Matt, Good choice! Scratch-off was the easiest, most effective Plex repair method I found when I tested them for Aviation Consumer and Kitplanes. Micromesh seems good, but it's labor-intensive, and you have to keep the plex wet to avoid burning the surface. Glad it worked! best, Cory Matt Dralle wrote: > Dear Listers, > > During the fitting of the Plexiglass canopy on my RV-8, I managed to put some pretty disheartening scratches in the windscreen section.
