Mark is this true for all the .093 and .040 angle on the 701? And is it structural
or architectural grade?
Thanks and sorry for the kick in the head...memory!

I have talked to Chris about this and he Ok'ed me to use .0125 in place of
the .090 and to use extruded .060 in place of the formed .040 longeron. I
plan on taking this approach with my 701.

Subject: | Streamlined strut coverings |
I just installed and tested out my new teardrop shaped strut covering on my
701... The improved performance was really something! The covers, which
weighed-in at about 8-lbs, increased the speed of the plane between 6 and
8-mph and improved the vertical performance. I was expecting only a 3 or
4-mph improvement, so this was a pleasant surprise.
The covers were made of .025" 6061-t6 sheet cut to 8-1/2" strips and bent
over the struts. They are strong enough to use to push the plane without
deforming. I don't have the tools to bend long strips so I started with an
801 strut cover kit from Zenith and had the width of the pieces cut down to
8-1/2"and re-trimmed. It was easy to put them on but took two people to bend
them over the struts and cleco them down. They are held rigidly in place by
the jury strut bolts.
I recommend this 701 modification to anyone who wants to improve
performance, reduce fuel costs, and add a little strength to their struts.
If anyone wants pics, pls request them by email directly to me.
Les

Subject: | Re: HDPE fuel tanks |
I just wanted to point out the draw back to this type of tank design, (very nice
work Curt) that someone should consider before jumping in. I know this is not
a wet wing but close enough and one thing that i have dealt with on alot of
wet wings is leaks. It is not something that starts over night but I have repaired
quite a few and its never fun. If the tank develops a leak over time
imagine how tough it might be to repair. plus pro-seal is hard to wash off.
just my .02
David
