I just installed and tested out my new teardrop shaped strut covering
on my 701... The improved performance was really something! The covers,
which weighed-in at about 8-lbs, increased the speed of the plane
between 6 and 8-mph and improved the vertical performance. I was
expecting only a 3 or 4-mph improvement, so this was a pleasant
surprise.
The covers were made of .025" 6061-t6 sheet cut to 8-1/2" strips and
bent over the struts. They are strong enough to use to push the plane
without deforming. I don't have the tools to bend long strips so I
started with an 801 strut cover kit from Zenith and had the width of the
pieces cut down to 8-1/2"and re-trimmed. It was easy to put them on but
took two people to bend them over the struts and cleco them down. They
are held rigidly in place by the jury strut bolts.
I recommend this 701 modification to anyone who wants to improve
performance, reduce fuel costs, and add a little strength to their
struts. If anyone wants pics, pls request them by email directly to me.

Subject: | Landing light pointing info needed for CH701 |
I'm looking at adding a landing light integrated in the slat on my CH701.
I'm looking for information about the approximate pointing angle for the
light. I'd like to get the approximate angle relative to the wing cord or
some other reference. This would take into account an average angle of
attach during landing. Does anyone have any idea?

Be a lot easier if you took the slats off and added VGs. Take care,

I will try to attach the pics to this email, but since they probably won't
show up here, in my initial email, I ask you to email me directly at
lgold@quantum-associates.com and not request them through the

Curt,
I did the what you are contemplating, works great with the light in the
slat. I put the light in so that it can be adjusted up or down so I would
not have to fix the angle until the plane was ready to fly. I put it on the
inside of the outside slat so it would be easy to get to and stay outside
the prop arch. I made a lexon cover the same shape as the slat by heating it
to 300-degrees in my oven over a mold that was a piece of slat. If you took
the slats off you would need to put the light in the wing. I would think
twice about doing this because the light gets hot and gas could easily get
into the wing when refueling.
Les
PS: keep the slats, they work great!

I recall pictures somewhere of landing lights built into the slat. Were they
yours Les?
