I've put Dual sticks in my 701 (based on the 601 dual option).
I like it a lot. My first few flights ever were in a RAF De Havilland Chipmunk
when I was a kid. It was magical. After that a center yoke is not an option for
me. I have one central throttle. Friction type from Assco.........Geoff

Hi George. What exactly do you mean by the following "I eliminated the crossed
cables going to the Elevator" ? Did you make some mod back there? I have Dual
sticks too in my 701. I found that I needed to make virtually no change to the
original design aft of the seat. I love your interior pics. I didn't get that
far yet.
George. how does the center consul work for you. I'd love to put one in, I could
use the extra space. Is it cramped for you? This is what I,m most interested
in
PS. there is a misspelling in your site address. Airplane is mis-spelled. It takes
you to a junk site. just correct the spelling in the address bar and hit enter
again Thanks....Geoff.........I LOVE THIS LIST.

To those who have done the dual stick mod, do you think it would be difficult to
do it after its built? Just in case I don't care for the y stick? Quicker to
go with the flow you know.

Subject: Zenith701801-List: Dual Sticks & Rudder Cables
When I built the 701 I also installed dual sticks. Hands off level flight
was very easy, and I eliminated the crossed cables going to the Elevator.
Ended up with a very smooth control system. Cable pulleys were also
installed as part of the design. Using much of the design of the 601 dual
stick diagram, they were built to fit the 701 from basic materials. Once
you get the hang of getting in by putting your right foot in on the right
side of the stick first, entering the airplane is very easy. As you can see
from my pictures, that allowed for a single central mounted throttle
control, and the airplane can be flown easily from either seat.
On the Rudder Cables I installed a pair of "guide" pulleys just behind the
point where the cables come thru the front seat bulkhead. This resulted in
the cables not changing direction slightly thru the front mounted fairleads
as well as reducing the friction point at the front fairlead. At the rear
where the cables exit the Fuselage, I used a nylon fairlead on the inside of
the fuselage as well as the outside of the fuselage under the cable fairing
plate. I had a lot of clearance between the cable and the "L" angles of the
Fuselage along the Rudder cable run.
You can see the details of all the above in my pictures located at
www.mykitiarplane.com/MyCH701.
You can also purchase the 2000 picture DVD that I have there as well if you
wish to see all the details very close up on your computer.

Les,
Thanks for the info about bending the lexan. I was wondering how hot I
would need to get it. I'll make sure the wife is not around when I try
that. :-)
I'm building the slats from scratch now so I have access to the innards.
I'm going to put in at least one extra rib to hold the lamp bracket. I've
already put the wire for the light in the wing. I plan to mount the lamp in
a gimbal so I can adjust where it points. I'm still hoping someone knows
approximately what works for the angle so I can minimize the window I put in
the slat.

So, assuming that the light points out from the slat in the picture at the

I'd like to get opinions from CH801 fliers out there. I'm building an 801
and I'm at the point of making some panel decisions. I'm Instrument rated,
and previously built a Series 5 Kitfox with an IO-240B. I built the plane
with a complete IFR panel.
Reality turned out the Kitfox, is too much of a hands on airplane to
use as a good IFR platform, so I never fly it IFR. It is a very fun
plane to fly though, but tires you out on a long flight from the
constant little off course nudges you get from every little bump
in flight.
So I'd like some honest opinions about how solid is the 801 in flight?
Is it Cessna 172 stable, or does it require a lot more pilot attention?
Regards,
Jeff

light po
On my Kitfox I put wingtip landing lights on it, but never liked them
as I don't like the way wingtip mounted landing lights illuminate the ground.
I have a detachable light bar, that I attach to my float attach points on
the belly now. It has 3 big halogen lights on it, and illuminates the
runway better than the high beams on my car. I use a quick disconnect
plug, and it takes about 2 minutes to mount the light bar (2 bolts)
Belly mounted lights also offer a BIG advantage that reflected light
off the belly provide great ground illumination in the flare, so you have
illumination to the sides in your peripheral vision. Which if you have
tried to three point a taildragger at night you will know exactly what
I'm refering to.
I have flown various other planes with wing located landing lights
and none of them have worked nearly as well as do my current belly
mounted lights.
I think you can do a slick looking wing light installation, but I don't
think they will work as well as do belly mounted lights.
On the Kitfox even with 3 big KC Hilites (yes offroad truck lights)
even thought they look like real drag producers, the reality is
that I don't notice much difference in performance.
I've been flying with them for about 6 years now and they really have
worked well for me.
Regards,
Jeff

BIG DISCLAIMER !!
Listers,
On rare occasions I have seen 6061T6 extruded angle in both 3-foot and 6-foot lengths
at Home Depot.
I stress the word 'rare' because they stock aluminum, steel, brass, etc, in a stand-up
rack and it consists of whatever they can get at the moment. Or, whatever
some buyer buys for stock.
I'd wager that the buyers don't know 6061 from Shinola, but that's another story.
Point is, if you are wandering through a box store and see a bin of assorted metals,
look closely at the labels which MAY be attached to the individual pieces.
Ones I've seen are made by Crown Metals and specifically state "6061-T6" and have
a Crown part number.
Insert another disclaimer here!!
Anyway, if you only need a couple of pieces and want to avoid the freight charges,
this may do it.
Stuff I purchased couple of years ago had the 'fillet' on the inside angle, and
a very slight 'rounding' on the outside corner.....not the sharp 90-degree deal
on the cheap decorative aluminum made from recycled garbage.
The Crown material makes excellent brackets, braces, etc, for things like radio
supports, ELT supports, and others.
Regards to all,
Zed

Structural is 6061 T6 will have fillet on inside radius
Architectural is 6063 and will have 90 deg corners.
Zenith gets there 6061 custom extruded.
You can change all the .093 for .125 6061 T6 in your 701 the .040 can be
changed in the longerons for .060 extruded 6061 T6 but the remainder
.040 is less then 4ft and should be bent on a brake to plans.

Not Les, but I have bent a lot of lexan. Just use a heat gun and warm
it with pressure toward the way you want to bend it. When it gets warm
enough it will bend. It is very important that you keep the heat moving
back and forth on the bend. If you let it stop or get too hot, it will
distort. Try a couple of small pieces first, nothing to it. Larry, N1345L

Let's not start the VG wars again. To the question; I am planning on HID
landing and taxi lights on my 701. I am going to install them on the UC near the
centerline of the fuselage, one will point down the runway for taxying the
other will be aimed toward the runway for a typical nose up landing angle.

Kevin,
One of my favorite designers, Steve Wittman, used a center stick in the
Buttercup, Tailwind, & O&O Special. However , it had a "T" on the top of the
stick that extended to the left to a point centerline to the pilot and then
vertically DOWN a few inches and that was the dualstick. Would be very
easy, cheap and light to make a removable extension to the standard "Y" to
accomplish the same thing. Both sides if you want it. That mod will be on my
aircraft.
