They came with the Skyshop firewall forward package for the 701. Do I need grommets to protect the fiberglass where the studs go through or can the studs be attached without grommets ? Grommets were not included in the FWF kit. Many years ago on my 701, the Dzus fasteners didn't fit tight (I thought they did). The chaffing and vibration caused the holes to enlarge. On one flight, the left side of my top cowling came "undone" and popped up at about a 45 degree angle. I made an uneventful landing, actually looking "under the top left side of the cowling" it was so high up. I was lucky it stayed with the airplane and that it didn't come off and hit something or someone on the ground.------ Looking back on the situation----- I should have used an aluminum backing "plate" where the grommet went through the fiberglass. Hope this helps. However, I didn't know how to install them properly and so I left them out. My 701 plane has been flying for over a year. I have not noticed any damage to the un-grommeted fiberglass even though I take the cowl off about once a week. If I start to see wear, I will try to install grommets but it does not look like I will need them. Important is the gap that accrues for grip when turning the Dzus to secure the lid. The grommets can be helpful in this as well. Aircraft Spruce part number GP5B is likely but size your grommets to fit the Dzus diameter. About .06 each. These work well too so long as the inside diameter is snug to the Dzus stem. The object is, of course to keep the Dzus from becoming loose parts and being floppy in the hole. Insert Dzus thru the fiberglass and add the plastic washer, that's it.
