Subject: Other Door Questions - Skyshop Products
    From: "txpilot" <djg7@comcast.net>
I'm working on installing a set of bubble doors purchased from Skyshop and I have a few questions. I tried asking Skyshop, but they said they don't support ZAC anymore. The doors were supplied with 70 A5 rivets, 30 A4 rivets, and 35 rivets I've never seen before (in picture on left). They appear to be 1/8", but I'm wondering if they're specifically made for riveting lexan. What the heck are these, and where do I use them? Second issue: is there any good technique for riveting the lexan to the door? I have a plexiglass bit and step unibit for drilling, but it seems bending the lexan in place on the top and bottom flange will almost certainly crack it. Third issue: someone on this forum mentioned problems with mounting the gas strut on the rear door tube, saying the door flexes when pulled down. Has anyone else had this issue? Anyone try mounting the gas strut on the forward tube and cabin frame? Issue #4: related to a recent post of a door coming off in flight, I'm thinking of another solution. I'm considering purchasing a couple Quick Release pins from Aircraft Spruce ( http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/hapages/qkreleasepin.php ), drilling a 1/4" hole in the door latch and strike plate, and simply inserting the pin prior to flight. I think the pin should be able to come out quickly in the event of an emergency. Any thoughts on problems with this solution? Thanks for any help. I think they look sort of like Cherry rivets. Supposedly a substitute for Solid Rivets but CH doesn't favor them too much. Dan, my only concern with pinning the door latch in flight is that if you were in an accident that disabled you (out cold) and someone was trying to rescue you. Having the door pinned closed could slow things down quite a bit. I think the horizontal bar idea JG posted would be a better solution as a supplimentary door closure. The rivet on the left looks like a "closed end blind rivet" like the ones I used to make my glued-up fuel tanks. They are capped at the end so that stuff (fuel or air) does not bleed through the stem. I don't think they would work any different than the Avex rivets for this purpose. I don't see where these would work any better for lexan. They probably included them because that is what they had on hand. Curt

Harvey, My 7-01 has been flying for over a year. Rather than put in additional "L"s, I glued in some cheap light 1" wood "L" moldings and painted over them in places in the fus where I wanted to stop the oil canning. This method seems to be working very well. The oil canning has been reduced and this is a lighter and a much simpler approach than having to rivet in metal "L"s. Les -----Original Message----- From: owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Harvey Richards Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 12:31 PM Subject: Zenith701801-List: Additional L angles in fuselage. <lisa.richards@ns.sympatico.ca> I have seen where people have done the diagonal additional L bracing to cut down on oil canning. I am at that stage and have been wondering what to do. Some have gone with diagonals and some with complete X's between the Ls shown on the plans. Would not going straight across, parallel to the Ls, shown on the plans do the job. One could then tie them together with .025 gussets as already shown on the plans. This would take less L angles, be lighter and cut the unsupported distance in half also. Any thoughts? I have the CZAW tanks which have a capacity of approx. 42.5 Litres each. Looking at my plans, this version does not have a 7V11-2K and the tank reaches 7V6-2 instead. The differences for the tank fold plans, top of page down, as follows. ZAC 10 gal 502 100 488 200 5 dl=1295 W=565 CZAW 665 48 630 199 5 dl=1547 W=565 FWIW I do notice a pitch up effect at T/O although have not correlated that with the amount of fuel carried. I assumed it was more to do with the centre of lift being different to the C of G on the wheels or the centre of lift changing with the angle of attack of the wing - where the slats might alter pressure distribution over the top wing surface? fuel outlet for the CZAW tanks is located in the same corner as the ZAC tanks that is lower rear corner of the inboard tank side panel. Effectively it moved rearward due to the longer tank.
