If you are looking at the MGL EFIS (color or monochrome) check with Matt at
Sport Flying Shop (MGL/USA). He often has trade-in units.
Also a combination of an MGL Flight 2 and E-1 engine monitor can give you a
usable VFR panel in two 3.5 inch instruments for about $700. Chris Smith
flees with this in the Cleanex II (a Corvair-powered Sonex).

I don't know how inexpensive you want to get but the MGL Avionics
Stratomaster Ultra EFIS can give you a complete six pack (black and white)
for under $3K. If you can do without the artificial horizon it drops to
under $2K. Another option are the maxi singles from the same company. With
artificial horizon, it is less than $2K (about $1500 ?). Aircraft Spruce
was selling refurbished Artificial Horizions for < $600 last time I checked.

John, I can appreciate the idea of wanting to save a little money on your plane.
The details do get expensive. I question the need for a full six pack of instruments
in a 701. Since it was originally intended as a day VFR flier. For
sure, each builder will do what they want in this regard. That is why we are
into Experimental aircraft.
The other thing to think about with steam gauges is weight. I have a turn co-coordinator
that I almost installed in my 701 until I read the tag that said it
weighed over three pounds. I guess the gyro wheel is pretty heavy. Also you
end up with the additional hassle of installing a vacuum system to run the other
gyros.
I suppose that is where Dynon is making their big marketing ploy. They are cheaper
than the total of all six instruments (new) and they weigh a lot less. For
cost, you can always check out E-Bay but of course, "Buyer Beware". You never
really know what it is you are getting there.
Best of luck with your build

Subject: | Performance of 80hp Rotax 701 on floats? |
Hi guys,
I wanted to know if any of you have experience operating a 701 with an 80hp 912UL
on floats? I know more power of the 912ULS would be ideal, but how does the
80hp 912UL perform? How does it fly at gross on floats?
Also, are the Zenith numbers for the 80hp accurate. If not, which ones would you
call into question?
Thanks,
Jon McDonald

This is one question I asked Mark Townsend about the differences. He said t
hat on take off (gross) -with the 80HP, you would count 10 seconds, where
as with the 100 HP, you count 6 seconds.

For those who might be interested:
We have made some updates to our website and added a few products to the "coming
soon" section.
Check them out at:
http://www.magnificentmachine.com
MagVair Forged Pistons:
We now have pistons in all sizes in stock and ready to ship.
This is the second run of pistons; we have tightened up the pin to piston tolerances
a little.
Due to an increase in manufacturing costs we are forced to increase the prices
slightly.
However we realize that some may have been waiting for these to return to stock
before placing their order.
As such, we will hold off the price increase for a week or so.
MagVair Forged 4340 Rods:
Our Rods have been on back order for some time now due to a container that was
"set aside for inspection".
The container has been released and I expect the rods here any day now.
Those of you who have patiently been awaiting these will not be disappointed.
MagVair Forged 4340 Crankshafts:
The crankshaft project continues to move forward.
We now have a 3" stroke crankshaft in a case with our rods, pistons and aluminum
cylinders.
This engine is very close to completion and I expect it to run within the next
couple of weeks or so.
We will then proceed with testing.
We recently put a 3.25" crankshaft into a case with a cam and two rods.
When we rotated the crankshaft we were looking for interference between the rods
& the cam lobes.
It was a quick and dirty test to see if it was going to be a big problem or a small
problem.
We did not see any interference with those two rods.
We have not mocked up all of the cylinders yet so we may find some interference
with the other rods.
At this time it looks like there should be no problems.
We will mock up the entire rotating assembly soon as time permits.
Paying customers come first; R&D doesn't pay the bills. :-)
Our next Engine project looks like it will have the 3.125" crankshaft and 92MM
cylinders.
This will net a 3165cc engine.
Thank you,
