This is just my technique; I do not try to trim out the back pressure. I
leave the trim alone. If I have to go around at the last second, it makes
the plane easier to control and one less thing to think about when you
apply full power low to the ground. I do have the large trim tab and it
seems to be quite effective, but to be honest I have not tried to trim it
out for the approach. I do approach at 55 with no flaps to flair and
touch down. I adjust RPM as needed to vary the steepness, but not the
speed. Works great for me. The VGs under the elevator have helped with
control all the way to the ground, I like them.

I used the small trim tab that came with the unit and it works fine.
However I did straighten the trailing edge of the elevator before
installing the trim tab and I have the VGs installed.
I cross the end of the runway with 15 degrees of flaps at 50 mph and
have plenty of control. At 60 mph I would float down the runway for
quite a ways and maybe balloon a little if I wasn't smooth on the stick.
I also like to have back pressure on the stick. Doing touch and goes
with no back pressure requires applying forward pressure on the stick to
keep the nose down when you go to full power on climb out.

To Anyone Who Is Interested:
I have one of John's molded nylon AOA units. It is brand new, never been
installed.
I also have a brand new magnahelix instrument, that recommended one. I also
have the printed colored scale that goes into the meter.
I also have to new brass fittings that are on the molded nylon pickup wing
unit.
I will sell the complete package for $65 including shipping.
Can take and send you a picture if you would like to see what you are
getting before you buy it.
Never got around to installing it in the 701 that I built, finished, flew,
and then sold last year.
Send me a direct eMail if you are interested: mykitairplane@mrrace.com
Thanks,
George Race

Subject: | For Sale Continental 0-200 and FWF for CH701 |
I am removing my Continental 0-200, accessories, and the firewall forward from
my CH701. The engine was "0" timed in 1993 (as far as my understanding but verify
with me if it is critical) , and currently has slightly less than 400 hours.
The engine itself is certified, but the electrical accessories, a B&C lightweight
starter and B&C 8 amp alternator, are not. The alternator keeps up with
landing lights, strobes, portable radio, electric fuel pump, at cruise RPM's,
but with these loads at taxi it is not large enough to charge. Complete logs
from "0" time. I can't find records of the mags (and can't remember right now
if the are Slick or Bendix). MS carburetor.
The engine runs perfectly. The oil pressure is right where you'd expect a new engine
to operate. The cylinders are chrome. Oil consumption is appx 8-12 hours
per quart. This engine has the Continental $200 + breather elbow found in 0-200
powered C-150 Aerobats. Oil Cooler. Last annual 4/2008 compressions were low
to mid 70's/80. Relatively dry inside cowling. Always a spot on concrete from
breather tube when parked
Warp Drive composite ground adjustable 3 blade prop.
Engine mount, pressure cowling for CH 701 if wanted.
This engine is currently installed and flown appx every two weeks. I intend to
remove it in April.
If you are really serious about a potential purchase, would like scanned images
of the logs, would like videos of it operating, pictures of the installation,
or would like to come inspect please contact me.
Asking $8300 for all. I'd rather sell everything all at once. I plan to advertise
on Barnstormers, engine/accessories only for $7800, in the next couple of weeks.
If interested leave message at (435)-734-2050 or email djonesutah(at)digis.net.
The engine is in Northern Utah.

Doug,
Somebody correct me if I'm playing out in left field without a glove again
(happens frequently) but I'm pretty sure if the engine has been on a
homebuilt it no longer qualifies as a certified engine.
Hopefully I'm incorrect
John

I think if the data plate has not been removed and the AD's are current in the
engine logbook I beleive it still qualifies as a cetified engine.

I am pretty sure John Bolding is correct.
Even if it does have all the ADs performed and has been serviced in
accordance to P23 standards, that does not imply the the engine can still be
used on a certified aircraft.
The accessories and running gear certainly is not P23, therefore it can be
implied that the fuel and air, ect supplied to the engine may not have been
in the proper manner or proportions. Therefore the FAA does not allow the
engine back into the P23 world.
An A&P would probably have to be consulted for the final word and five A&Ps
may have six different answers. ;-)
Good luck!

Hmmmm. I don't know. It's always been seviced by an A&P. I've made an extra effort/cost
to keep it certified. Maybe you are right.

A good question to ask the tech advisors at EAA.
