I don't know if anyone else has noticed but there are CH-701 drawing updates posted on the Zenith Builder support website. The release date for these is 11/08. The only really substantial update I noticed was the increase in the thickness of the rudder spar to .032. Doug MacDonald CH-701 Scratch Builder NW Ontario, Canada

Hi Dan, The junior high kids built this one.... http://ckjh.cksd.wednet.edu/staff/airplane/update_31.htm you might also contact William Wynne @ www.flycorvair.com I know the VW is wider than the Corvair but it may still fit? I can't say for sure. If you like the one the kids built I think the molds are still around, I could lay one up for you? -------- Brady McCormick Poulsbo, WA www.magnificentmachine.com Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=233924#233924 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/411164_112.jpg

I recently purchased one of these radios and installed it in my 701. This is an inexpensive unit that I purchased new from Aircraft Spruce. Based on my many hours of operation with this radio (2 flights) I can say that it works fine. On my first test (in the hanger) everything seemed to work fine. However once I started the engine, the unit would not quiet down even though the squelch was turned all of the way up. After flying with it for a few minutes, I had to turn it off because it was blasting my ears with noise. Once on the ground I looked at the manual and found there was a programming change (easy to make once you are aware of it) that would cure the problem. The second flight proved everything works fine. The biggest issue with it was creating all of the connections so I could plug it into the back of the unit. The female connector required soldering to the small pins of the connector #22 wire to each pin (no they were not the crimp type). Of course the small soldering iron I had at home was a little too large so it made the job of soldering more difficult because you have to make sure not to bridge over to another pin. I placed shrink tubing over each connection to make sure there were no shorts. Once the female plug connections were made, I had to make all of the connections to power, ground and the headsets. Hindsight being 20-20, I should have drawn locations to scale on a large piece of cardboard and sized the lengths of wires needed for each of the terminals. That would have made a much neater job and reduced the mass of wires I have running underneath my dash. The hardest part was soldering the connectors on the plug. I searched the internet for information to help with this and came up with nothing. Also, on this forum I have only noted references to people buying cables already made, no one has actually written about constructing the cable and connectors. Now that I have everything working, I am sure there will be someone who will come up with ideas that I could have used. Anyway there was a question in the past about these radio's so I thought I would offer my experience. Based on what I have found to date, if you are looking for an inexpensive radio you might want to consider one of these. If I have any problems with the radio in the future, I will send a follow up post. Well any problems that are not self inflicted! Dan Wilde N948DW
