The top of drawing 7F8 shows the lower bearing plate (7F8-4) on the outside of the skin (like your second picture). I'm wondering about a wedge made out of 0.090" to the rear of 7F8-4 so that the stiffener transitions rather than having 7F8-4 being punched? Not sure which is correct but it can be built either of two ways. The first shot (white paint) is of my unflown 701. I didn't build the section shown. The second shot is of George Race's 701 N73EX (from his excellent DVD of photos). You either have a gap between the floor and the plate or between the plate and the channel. Unfortunately no one has a shot from the side to show what happens between the channel and the plate. The shots in the Zenith photo assembly guide from inside the fuselage don't appear to shot the plate. So I guess it goes outside. I think I prefer it that way - like George's and David's. Subject: Spacer between 7F8-4 and 7F8-6? (was CH701 front lower
bearing plate (7F8-4) location?) Craig, It looks like George put a spacer between the Rear Lower Bearing (7F8-4) and the Nose Gear Stops (7F8-6). I'm guessing that this was so the Nose Gear Strut Assembly (7L1-1J) doesn't hit the stops before 7L1-1J rides in 7F8-6. I made my own 7L1-1J and have the same issue. I figured I made 7L1-1J about 1mm too long (not much). I think John Marzulli has the same issue with his kit. I'm trying to decide if (a) I leave it alone, or (b) I re-make 7F8-8 a little higher, or (c) I put a spacer under 7L1-5J, or (d) I do what George did. Have other builders run into this? Oh, one more thing. Aren't the bolts on 7F8-4 in George's picture too short? BTW, on mine when I use AN3-10A (per plans) they seem too long. I'm at this stage of building my 701 and I saw the same thing. Those 10's look really long. Anyone know the reason for this? Subject: Spacer between 7F8-4 and 7F8-6? (was CH701 front

I found that using the kit supplied parts, I was concerned that the top strut cover, 7L1-5J, would be coming down on the top support possibly bending or breaking the bolts that hold it in place. My solution was to add a couple of .125 spacers to raise the top plate about an 1/8 of an inch above the top plate. And yes, later I did put longer bolts through the bottom bracket with proper thread extensions showing. I think somewhere on my DVD there are additional pictures that show the longer bolts. My problem is similar, but not the same. The bungee cord is not under much tension, but full extension should not cause any banging on the steering stops. I think a small spacer between the stop plate and the bearing is still the solution in my case. Thanks, John Marzulli http://www.GenevieveMarzulli.org/ http://marzulli.smugmug.com/ http://701Builder.blogspot.com/ http://www.JohnMarzulli.net/ On Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 11:13 AM, George Race <mykitairplane@mrrace.com>wro te: > You are correct Curt. What I was talking about was putting in a spacer to make the stop plate (7L1-5J) higher. You are talking about making 7L1-5J lower in order to pre-load the bungee - correct? If you do that, the Nose Gear Strut Assembly (7L1-1J) is going to be held up in flight by the Stop Plate (7L1-5J) which will hit (i.e. rest on) the Upper Channel, top support (7F7-1SP). As George was saying, you might bend 7F7-1SP or break it loose. Curt

I made a 4th set which are custom fit and higher when I assembled the strut. I did not like the gap which was about 3mm when the strut was sitting in place. --- On Tue, 3/24/09, George Race <mykitairplane@mrrace.com> wrote: > From: George Race <mykitairplane@mrrace.com> > Subject: RE: Zenith701801-List: Spacer between 7F8-4 and 7F8-6? Curt _____ From: owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Craig Payne Sent: Monday, March 23, 2009 10:29 PM Subject: RE: Zenith701801-List: CH701 front lower bearing plate (7F8-4) location? Not sure which is correct but it can be built either of two ways. The first shot (white paint) is of my unflown 701. I didn't build the section shown. The second shot is of George Race's 701 N73EX (from his excellent DVD of photos). You either have a gap between the floor and the plate or between the plate and the channel. Unfortunately no one has a shot from the side to show what happens between the channel and the plate. The shots in the Zenith photo assembly guide from inside the fuselage don't appear to shot the plate. So I guess it goes outside. I think I prefer it that way - like George's and David's. But it is worth asking Zenith about. Let us know what you find out. -- Craig From: owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Curt Thompson Sent: Monday, March 23, 2009 10:26 PM Subject: Zenith701801-List: CH701 front lower bearing plate (7F8-4) location? Where does the Central Floor Stiffener (7F8-1) go in relation to the Front Lower Bearing Plate (7F8-4)? Does 7F8-1 go below 7F8-2? That is what drawing 7F10 seem to indicate. Won't there be a gap between the floor (7F8-7) and 7F8-1 at the end of 7F8-4? Hi Curt: Here is part of my picture, Nose Gear 2.jpg from the DVD Note there is a very small tapered opening from the back of the bearing plate. Also note the longer "final" bolts in the bearing mount with extra spacer. I am not sure what I am seeing in your picture. Looks like the floor pan is sort of bent up away from the mounting bracket below it. Maybe just an illusion the way the picture was taken. I don't see that same floor pan warp in my picture, but it is taken from a slightly different direction. Will keep looking to see if I have any better picture of the area. BTW: Zenith "solved" this problem on the 601. The channel is wider than the plate. So the plate fits inside the U of the channel. I wonder what they do on the 750? Given the resemblance of the 750's firewall to the 601 I be it uses the same approach. -- Craig From: owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-zenith701801-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of George Race Sent: Tuesday, March 24, 2009 5:50 PM Subject: RE: Zenith701801-List: CH701 front lower bearing plate (7F8-4) location? That's what mine looks like.
