I set the spacing to 710 mm Doug and then was going to build a template from that
for the wings. I see in George Races pics that the tube does not appear straight
also. There is a slight bow at the front where it attaches to the 4130 cabin
frame, almost like the angle is slightly off where the tubing is welded. When
you sight along yours Doug is it straight? Thanks

Listees:
I am concerned about the tubeless nose gear tire on my 701 going
flat and resulting in a greatly reduced prop clearance with the
ground. I had been considering installing a tube in the tire and was
surprised when the April Popular Mechanics had this to say on page
112: "Don't ever install a tube in a tire that says "tubeless on the
sidewall"... The ribbed inside surface of the tubeless tire is not
finished to accept a tube. Tube-type tires have smoother surfaces,
without any outstanding ribs or texture to wear out that tube
prematurely."
Does anyone know if the above applies to the tubeless tire provided
with the 701 kit? Has anyone installed a tube in their 701 nose gear
and flown it for a significant period of time?

Zenith drop shipped the Matco tires and brakes to me. After having problems
with the tubeless design I called Matco.
The guy at Matco happily sold me the correct tubes for the tires. Just make
sure that you powder the insides appropriatley and keep the PSI to
acceptable levels.
Good luck!

I put tubes in all of mine. Those tubeless ones drove me nuts and I didn't
trust them. Maybe I'm wrong but the psi on such a light airplane is so low
anyway. I have the same rims on my main gear on the Kitfox and they were
supplied with tubes from Matco or Grove, one or the other.
That sure may be true with car tires, though.

Mine is straight Harvey but remember, I am scratch building. I put the front diagnal
fitting up in place unwelded and tacked with a mig. I then took it all
apart and oxy/acet welded it. This way it lined up correctly.

Thanks to you both for the reply. I was trying to get it straight but that is not
possible. Do not archive.

Subject: | Re: Tubes in Tubeless Tires |
My first 701 and the one I'm building now have tube type tires. They are generic
turf tires. (Not suitable for highway use" is printed on the side). We didn't
put tubes in the first one, per the plans, and never had a problem.
I wondered at the time if that was correct, but followed the plans, thinking the
designer knew what he was talking about. About once every two months, we would
air the tires up, usually about 15 lbs all around. They would leak down about
2-3 lbs over that span.
Not that I would recommend that to others, but that is what we did and we won't
put tubes in this one either, since we had success with the first set of tires.
Some wear suspenders and a belt because it makes them feel better, so if you
feel better with tubes in your tires I say go for it.

What with changing plans and instrument panel design I have a fair amount of
surplus gear for sale. My current EFIS (MGL) and radio (XCOM) incorporate
many of the functions of these separate pieces (AOA, AP, transponder
encoder, intercom). I'll be listing these items on Barnstormers in a few
days but figured I'd post the list here. Each of these items is unused,
uninstalled and typically in the manufacture's original box with the
original manual. I don't know about all of their warrantees but Trio has
confirmed that the warrantees on their autopilots start at first use, not
time of purchase.
Some of this gear was purchased as far back as 2005 but for the most part
the design hasn't changed. I and the parts are located in Utah. Prices
include shipping via UPS Ground within the US. Photos and more information
available on request. Contact me DIRECTLY at craig@craigandjean.com. Don't
just reply to this message and clutter up the list.

The tires I got from Zenith, say in big black letters on the side "Tube
Type". However, Zenith recommends running them tubeless. They furnish
tubeless stems and "O" rings. I put tubes in mine. I trust the tire
manufacturers more than Zenith. Everything with Zenith is about saving
weight. Larry, N1345L
