Not sure about doing this in airplanes though I cant see a problem at the 701 ground speed. But my dad has been putting tubes in tubeless tires since I can remember and driving them on the road. And believe me that depression era man gets his moneys worth out of his tires, so they spend a lot of miles at to me, unsafe tread thickness, with no problems. just my $.01 worth Kevin -------- Mark Twain: Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. Subject: 701 Serial Number Question
    From: "Bob Percival" <bob@frontrange-pc.com>
I was under the impression that our plans/kit number would become our aircraft SN. Looking through the FAA Registry I see that most the 701s are registered as 7-XXXX. So I'm guessing that my SN would be 7-6267 since my plans are SN 6267. Is that correct? What will the 750 builders do? Bob Percival 701/Vair Plans

I just made my RV-10 serial number 0001. If I ever build another RV-10 it will be 0002. You're the manufacturer, you determine the serial number. Using your kit number is fine, as long as it is unique to YOUR production. Les. I read your post earlier and was tempted to reply but did not because I thought others had covered the issue. For the record my guess is that the damage was caused by a hard landing on the mains then a bounce with the next touchdown nose first. but I believe that this is not news as it was covered by a previous post. Seven years ago, a friend had an engine failure (532) and landed in a soft ploughed field. The front wheel dug-in and pushed the gear leg back along with the firewall and the front floor pan causing considerable damage. The gear leg was not damaged. I personally believe that the damage caused was due to overstress of what is a sound design and I made no change to my 701 in that area. What did get my attention was that the rudder pedals were pushed up and punctured the nose tank leaking fuel onto the floor pan and hence forward toward the engine. Fortunately because the exhaust pipe was cold and there were no electrical short , there was no fire. This was a great motivator for me to remove my nose tank, expand wing tanks, and install a feed tank in the rear fuselage. The most important mod I made to my 701. The serial number on the plans is just sequential number, nothing more, it's basically how many plans they have sold. You can give your plane any serial number you want. Your "N" number can also be what every you want as long as it isn't taken and is within the FAA rules. My serial number is LM-001. You don't even have to call your plane a Zenith 701 if you don't want too, mine is a LM-701. My kit was CZAW supplied with the Matco rims and "not for highway" "Tube type" tyres. But after a year one tyre would leak slowly and at that time I discovered there are no tubes in there. I got a tube from ACS and fitted it, the leak was a thin area in the inside of the tyre that was venting out the tread groove. Four years on the other two are still OK as tubeless and I will fit tubes when they need it. What usually gets tyres around here is the gorse (braken?) prickles that sometimes inhabit bush runways. These will flatten tube or tubeless equally well.
