Subject: | Re: Gas springs for doors |
Craig and all, good morning.
Have'nt bought any yet as i'm working through other issues. I was told by an
employee at ZAC that the 30# rating is supposedly used for the 750. I dont know
if the 750 uses the same bubble doors as what's offered for the 701, perhaps
the fellow enthusiasts constructing the new 750's could help [Rolling Eyes]
I know I will fab the door bracket to assure door is forced closed to prevent
"accidental opening" by having the spring go over center at the near closed position.
The length of this bracket or "arm" should'nt need to be much.
I recently had my bubble door fall from the open position from the wing sucker,
which ended up breaking the back edge of my door because the harness buckle
was hanging out of the door opening "just right". The sellection chart can get
you what ever range you want. Hope this helps.

What happens if you use regular auto gas instead of premium in the 100
HP 912S? If you find yourself in a place that only has regular auto
fuel, can it be used for a short period without compromising safety
and/or damaging the engine?
No I have not had this happen but it is not out of the realm of
possibilities.

Craig, I used 30 lb from McMaster. Tried the 20 lb first, wasn't enough

Anyone installed the streamlined struts on a CH701? Parts cost was
estimated at $1,000. Lot of money for no more than 5mph increase in
cruise.
Think I will wait for 2 axis autopilot instead.

Thanks. Do you know the p/n of the spring or the open and closed lengths?
And do you know how far from the hinge you fastened the spring to the door
frame and the fuselage?

Another way to look at it is a 3-5 percent reduction in fuel burn at the
same cruise speed. Others have streamlined by wrapping the struts in 0.016.
There is a thread over on the Zenith builders site about this.

Ken: Contact Raven Aviation. They offer a kit for only $275. Their
email is: info@ravenaviation.us or snail mail at Raven Aviation, PO Box

I plan on buying a set later this year.

Or slip on the plastic streamline struts for about $200 or less. They work
well.

Dan it can't be used reliably but you might be OK with up to 50% mix into existing
premium fuel. Best option is to use avgas for topup because that wont cause
detonation to occur where low octane fuel will. Whether this damage occurs on
a particular flight is not related to duration of running the fuel but conditions
on the day such as load and temperatures. With the Bing carbs the most critical
phase will be full throttle. Low criuse settings should be OK and with
the 701 you can takeoff like that, also the first t/o will be on full strength
fuel so youre probably covered in an emergency.

I made some wing strut fairings for my 701 and they work fantastic. I gained a
minimum of 5MPH cruse and upwards of 10MPH cruse improvement is not unusual. I
now cruse between 90MPH to 105MPH. Its a very different airplane now; it gains
speed much faster and doesnt lose speed nearly as fast now when you pull the
throttle. I was so impressed with the performance improvement I decided to market
a Wing Strut fairing kit to help pay for my airplane habit. It includes all
four fairings and all the hardware needed for the installation for $275. Ive
spent a lot of money on airplanes over the years and this is the best performance
improvement for the least amount of money I have ever enjoyed.
Whether you by my kit or some other aero wing strut solution, just do it, you will
not be disappointment.

Do you have more of a description and/or some photos?
Metal or plastic?
How does it fasten to the steel struts?
How does it install around the aux struts?
Is it easy to retrofit or is it best to install it as you build the plane?
