Hi n7
I'm only 20 mi north of the arctic circle....lol Kotzebue here. myself and two
other A&P are building 3 701's. Next time u come through stop bye the Bering
Air shop. Were scratch building and so far the rudder, horizontal, elevator,
and spars are done for all three planes....we started in Oct. and love the building
progress. Ive read about a couple of 701's in anchorage that belong to
the local EAA members but haven't seen them yet. Good luck on the build (I'm
loving it.....even the mistakes) and ill try to answer your Q's if you throw
me slow balls.

Dan
Ive replaced my share of quick drains both the t locking type and the push type,
the t type is a better design but the push type should hold up for better
than a year.....3 to 5 yrs. this has been my experience on A/C running only
100LL, might be the gas. The most common problem Ive seen 9 times out of 10 is
a paint chip no matter how small will get stuck between the "o" ring and the
seat. and its always paint chips too. Every time i find one I'm still amazed
at the odds it would be to catch a small piece like that going past the seat.
I think Ive rotated the sump drains at least 4 times on 10 planes, replacing
the leaker, removing paint chip, and putting it back in stock for next time.

I have some items that might be of interest to 701 builders that are
surplus to my needs. I will include shipping with all of the prices
below.
1) New never used 701 control stick from the factory item #7C2-1 (cost
new from Zenith $119): $80.
2) A Woodcomp 3 blade 68" "Klassic" prop (cost new from Woodcomp is
$1532), 30 hours total time since new, Rotax hub, no damage whatsoever,
never run in rain: $700.
3) Spinner for the Klassic prop (cost new from Woodcomp $250): $150.
4) Prop extension for this prop for 701 installation (I think it is a
1.5" extension but I would have to check): $60.
5) An old style turn and bank instrument (with the vertical needle
indicating a bank) to help keep the wings level in low vis conditions:
$150.

Guys,
I purchased a few of these Wag Aero fuel caps for my 701. Easy to bend and
they fit nice and tight. However I have not used them for two reasons. (1)
They stick up higher and are not as streamlined. I don't want more drag and
flow interference on top of the wing. (2) I don't like fixing things that
aren't broken. The Zenith provided caps with a 1/16th" hole in the middle
seem to work fine.

Craig,
That is what I used and like Tommy said, no more venting fuel over the
wings. I am very happy with them

For those of you who don't want to weld/braze/solder a vent tube onto your
existing caps: Wag Aero sells a "Ram Air Pressure Cap" (SKU: E-481-000,
$37.95) that I think fits the 701 factor tank flanges. The vent tube comes
unbent (sticks straight up) so you can bend it to face forward. I haven't
tried one yet.

Jeff,
I think most 701 builders have added periscope type vent tubes to their caps
to both provide positive ventilation to the tanks, and help stop some of the
spillage during maneuvers. Before adding the vent tubes, the top of our
wings, and the bottom skins too, were stained by the awful yellow autogas we
use. If we filled the tanks and went flying, we had to clean the skins
several times over the next few days.
We did that and it really helped. I don't think this is discussed in the
plans, but probably should be in my opinion.
Also, if you add the vent tubes, be sure to solder the vents inside the cap
closed.
Take care,

I'm just guessing but it may be that different 701 fuel system designs
influence the spillage. It seems everyone does their fuel system internals
differently.
Les: if you still have the Wag Aero caps do you want to sell them? Respond

Les, The Zenith 7-V-11 drawing shows you drilling an additional 1/8" hole
in the cap. Look at 1K at the top left of he drawing. Not sure if everyon
e
has done this or not. A 1/16" hole does not vent much fuel.

Whew that will make Alcan trip # 15! I Must be nuts... :?
