Not only is it common practice, it's one of those things that MUST be done before flight, also it is done at worst case scenario which is minimum fuel quantity. After a flow check it's done for real with the engine at Take Off power . I had an article on this somewhere but now I can't find it. Basically, it entailed filling the tank with fuel, disconnecting the fuel line at the engine, and measuring the fuel flow. I think the idea was to make sure that the fuel system would supply fuel at the maximum consumption rate of the engine (times some reserve factor). This is done with the airframe tilted to represent max and min incline. This might highlight a venting problem as well. Curt Plans building CH701, working on the controls kit now.

Found a nice set of fiberglass fairings to reduce drag and siphon potential on the Kit Fox parts web page. Mark Townsend also showed me a gentleman who had used rubber gaskets originally intended for toilet installation to reduce drag around the skin - filler neck opening. Oh, and Im having so much fun with this I bought the 750 kit. 701 full kit (2008) 50% complete, meticulous work on the blocks folks! (Pls see barnstormers for details). Ill blame this move on Tommy Walker. Victor Menkal CH701 50% complete CH750 just ordered Whitehorse Yukon

    Subject: Carb sync
A while back I brought up the subject of unsteady carb sync and different types of throttle systems. Since then I have installed a MacFarlane Aviation 2into1 cable intended for our Rotaxes. After install I put my oil tube on it and fired it up, after mechanically synching the carbs, and the oil level stayed within 4" of one another from idle thru about 3500 rpm. According to my reliable source, 4" of oil is equal to about 1/4" of mercury, which is barely readable. That's the best mine has ever done. I shut it down...that's good enough for me. Will check it again after running it a while. BTW, I shortened the 6 foot cables to the exact same length and snaked them around in the engine compartment as necessary...I don't know if the same length is really necessary for proper synch, but wasn't taking any chances at cutting a $150 cable too short. The downside is I am back to the cursed springs...maybe I can live with it. I may have to...I have tried the plans setup with springs, solid rods without springs, and Cessna/Piper type push/pull cables with no springs... Joe

    Subject: 912 oil thermostat
There was a thread here a few weeks ago about the 180 degree oil thermostat on the 912...there have been reports on the 180 Permacool not bringing the temp up in cold temps(140F), and bypassing enough oil to cause high temps in hot weather(in the yellow), thus my reason for not having installed the one sitting on my shelf for the last 6 months or so.(Somebody asked what my problem was with the thermostat...well, there you go). Anyway there is a basic explanation for why this may be occuring at www.thermostasis.com . Look at Rotax 912 installation FAQ, bearing in my mind that these folks are selling thermostats. I found more detailed info at http://www.wingsforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=18036, the info coming from the same thermostasis source...has anybody had experience with these thermostats and could you pass it along Thx Joe
