Have any of you 701 owners replaced the Zenith main gear with one by Grove?
Is it an improvement over the original with regard to gradual splaying?

I beleive the "secret" is using heat when forming the main landing gear
"spring". I used heat when I scratch built my 701, after 4 years and
some "not so nice" landings--- the gear looked the same as the day it
was made.

Fritz, Can you elaborate on the method you used when bending the gear
with heat? Temp sticks? What was your procedure?
Thanks, John

John and all,
I use the term "I" loosly--- I meaning, I did not buy my gear from
anyone, but rather had a local FAB shop ( owned by a friend) make my
gear spring from "Bar stock", as derermined by the plans. I know they
heated the aluminum-- they do have temp sticks but they also told me
that----"to determine the proper heat on the aluminum bar, they lay down
a layer of soot from a prooane torch, than heat the aluminum to the
point that the soot "disappears"-- at that point the bar is ready to
bend. The trick is keeping the bar at the proper temperture.---------
Last week they just bent the mlg spring for the 750 I am scratch
building-------- I don't know if they used a temp stick or the "soot
method" but it came out real nice.
I don't know if this is something the "novice" could or should
attemp-------maybe some of the other folks can at to this.
Fritz
