MGL has preannounced their new XTreme EFIS over on the Yahoo user-to-user
group. Working units will be shown at Oshkosh with first deliveries towards
the end of the year. I'm pushing for final dimensions so folks can design it
into their panels now. Picture attached, more information here:

Subject: | Garmin 496/Radio install questions |
If anyone is using the Data Cable for the 496 -
I am wiring the 496 to talk to a D180 and to my Icom 210 and need some
clarification.
1) Does it make any difference if I which Data In/Out Port I send to which
device? IE, should port 1 be the Dynon and port 2 be the radio?
2) The 496 install manual says that the brown/orange voice is for auto
installs. Is this just "turn-by-turn" directions, or is it also the mono
audio?
3) Is the only real way to get XM music into my intercom by using the patch
cable from the front of the 496?
Thanks,

Dave, I built a bender, it uses a 20 ton bottle jack, its pretty crude but works
like a commercial bender, which
draws the material around a die.
I can shoot you a picture of it. I will draw up plans eventually and make it wide
enough to handle the 601 and 750 gear. If you are anywhere near Michigan I'll
be happy to lend it.

Honest, I'm not trying to star an argument ( I would head over to the 601 list
if I wanted to do that. LOL).
Does anyone have an opinion about the Lowrance 2000C? Is there anything better
out there? I'm about to buy one and seek the advice of builders here.
I'm looking for the most bang for the buck.
Thanks,

Hi Tommy,
http://www.aviationsafety.com/flight_cheetahfl150.html
Used one of their 190's a while back and am saving my fun money for either a
190 or one of the new 150's, head and shoulders above a Garmin 496, awesome
piece of gear.

I assume you mean "best color moving map" because you can get the older
grey-scale or non-moving map units very cheap.
If you get to OSH look for show specials (although you will pay sales tax I
think).
Spruce will sell you a used Garmin 296 for $700 but I bet you could beat
that on Barnstormers or eBay.
The Bendix King AV8OR ($619 from Spruce) has been well reviewed. The
touch-screen makes it easy to use.

Hi Tommy:
I had the Lowrance 2000C in my airplane. It was bright, easy and cheap to
update, and was very accurate in the places that I went, within 25 or 30
miles from here. I particularly liked the terrain avoidance feature. We
have a mess of big towers all over my immediate area. It had each one pin
pointed and showed my relationship, in altitude, to each as they went by.
With 5 or 6 1000 footers within 20 miles, it was the one feature that I
really liked. I also liked the nearest airport function. One button brings
up a list, in closest order, hit another button and go there, hit another
button and get the airport diagram and all COM and ATIS frequencies.
I know there are probably better ones out there, but K found the 2000C to be
very user friendly and it had a great color display.

I have the 2000C. It;s OK, but not overly user friendly. If I were
getting one now, I'd go with the AV8Tor. A friend has one and works great
either in a plane or car. Seems a bit more user fiendly. All of them will
get you where you want to go and allof them have tons on information in
their databases, which is worth the price alone!

Thanks for the replies.
I am actually looking for something that a non GPS user can learn to use fairly
quickly. The buyer for my plane asked me to buy him one. I noticed the 2000C
at ACS was $699. My friend Rick Roberts (of CH701-Suzuki fame) has one and likes
it.
What the buyer needs is something with a large screen that is easy to use.
I had an Airmap 300 back in the 90's and it was pretty good. It did lose it's GPS
signal on occasions. I read some comments on some of the lists where people
said their 2000C lost it's signal....
Just trying to get all the facts before I spend the gentleman's money.
Thanks,
