Guys
I sincerely want to know...have any of you who don't believe in vgs on
the 701 ever flown a 701 first with slats and then with properly placed
vgs? I mean, really? If so, please speak up. I'm not being
confrontational here, I really would like to hear from you and get your
first hand experience for the group.
The 701 is a different animal from anything else I have ever flown. The
lowspeed handling really sucked when slowed up to below say 40 mph, til
I replaced the slats with vgs. Then it settled down to an acceptably
flying airplane...not the best, just acceptable.
Like I said before, don't knock it til you have tried it...but if you
have tried it and didn't like it let us hear from you.
Thanks
Joe

Watch this video, and tell me again how sucky the 701 is at slow speed:

I don't think the problem is the slats!

But this is what happens if you pull the power too high.

Luckily Gus is a pretty good pilot and the 701 is pretty tough. The point is how
much STOL do you need and would a little more speed or less fuel burn or easier
low speed manors be preferable. The VGs are not for everyone, I don not believe
that they are as good as slats in extreme nose high attitude's at slow
speeds. And the induced drag really is a good air brake. But we all have our check
list, mine includes very good STOL, high wing, relatively easy plans building,
low cost, reasonable cruise and low fuel burn. I do not need to drop into
clearings twice the length of my garage with 30 foot trees all around it. So
the VGs are better for me. Why is this so hard for some, to under stand?
Now if Zenith offered a Pegstol like wing, none of us would be having this conversation.
But I guess some would need to claim that the slats may not extend and
that they are not as safe as fixed slats?

The folks at Quality Sport Planes in Cloverdale, CA (the west coast Zenith dealer)
built at least one 701 with electric flaps. They said they mostly did it to
lower the seat for a tall pilot.

does anybody have electric flaps installed and can you sent pics and tell us about
the install?

Subject: | Re: electric flaps |
I originally installed electric flaps in my 701 but later removed them to
install the manual flap handle "Kube Kontrol" sold by Quality sport planes.
My initial thought was to have a flap switch installed either on the stick
for next to the throttle (which I did) so I could apply full flaps at the
last segment of flight without taking my hand off the throttle. The reason
I removed it, was two fold. 1) There was absolutely no feel to electric
flaps. I mean, with a manual flap, you can tell when you are stressing the
wings by putting the flaps down a tad early. With electric flaps, they will
effortlessly grind to full flaps at "any" airspeed if bumped or if it
happened to "run-away". 2) I didn't want to take the chance they would do
just that or not come up at all due to an electrical failure.
The manual mechanism I purchased from Quality Sport Planes is absolutely
perfect. It has positive, secure notches about every 5 degrees and will
give a maximum of about 20 degrees flaps. Due to it's construction and
leverage, it is very easy to move between settings or full flaps if you wish
which is a huge improvement over the original 701 design. It's a little
pricey (about $325 or so) but one of my favorite things on my 701.
I've added a photo of the electric flap installation and a picture of the
brochure of the manual flap control at my site:

Hope the helps. Jim

Has anyone actually flown with the Pegastol wing on a 701? I sure am
curious as to the performance.

I like that kube control, I have some drawings of home brew versions of it. But
for the price I may just buy it. Are those Pegastol wings on BUZZ?

Yes, I've flown the Pegastol wing on a 701, and I really like it..
Well-balanced controls, feels really nice. The wing is longer and thinner
(only 6" thick), and the ailerons are symmetrical, so much faster and more
efficient than the original wing even without slats. More ribs and thicker
skins for no oil-canning, and higher Vne. The slats extend below the bottom
surface of the wing when deployed, effectively increasing the camber of the
wing giving the same high lift as the original 8" thick wing. The slats
deploy automatically when they feel the need. No change in pitch trim or
control feel. In a tight turn the inside slats may deploy before the
outside, but no feel of unbalance. I can't see a problem even if one slat
were to jam open..... In the landing flare the slats do their job really
well, for a landing speed that seems much the same as for the original
slats. The slot angle is much more streamlined than the original 701, so
much less drag increase. Feels really good in the landing phase, lots of
control and no sudden deceleration. This aircraft has been flying the
Pegatol wing for many years and lots of hours on long trips without any
problems.
Zenith approved the Pegastol wing as an alternative, but I don't understand
why they don't take it on as an alternative. That would make the 701 a real
classy aircraft!
