Subject: | Annual Inspection Checklist - CH701 |
135 hours and nearing my first full year of flying. Since my first flight I've
only touched a tool twice--with the exception of removing my cowl; found one
missing rivet under the wing after 2 months, and adjusted the the prop pitch.
Oh yah; there was that bent front axle after my first landing with the elevator
vortex generators--but that's for another day.
I'm finally using some of my spare time to start my annual condition inspection.
It's only been a year, so I can still remember building each part. But in
a couple of years, I'm sure I'll start missing some items--I probably already
am.
Does anyone have a Excel or Word annual inspection document they are willing to
share? It would certainly speed up this effort--and I can get back to flying.
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff,
I certainly would appreciate hearing about the bent axle issue,
especially the effect, or lack of, concerning the elevator vortex
generators, since I am planning on using them myself.
My impression is that I am not the only one that would be appreciative.

Builders:
I am close to finishing the cutting of holes in my instrument panel
for avionics. I do not have an ELT yet and am hoping that some
alternative to the Ameri-King AK-451at about $800 from ACS is
available. Does anyone have suggestions where it could be purchased
at a lower price or is there a lower price alternative?

Subject: | Caution--Elevator VGs work as advertised |
I installed the VGx at about 100 hours and 500+ landings in my kit built CH-701.
You may be asking yourself two things. Why am I averaging about 5 landings
an hour, and what's up with the Caution.
First the landings. I bought the 701 because of it's STOL capabilities. I have
17 acres in the mid-west. It's Flat but only 750 feet deep with mature trees
at one end and power lines about 300 feet away on the other; this year it was
300 feet of soy beans. I've "perfected" my landing technique and usually drop
in over the power lines--toward the trees. If you land long or fast they get
big VERY quickly, so I'm always practicing landings and can consistently land
in around 200 feet (solo and dry grass).
I installed the VGs thinking I could reduce my stall speed and therefore my touchdown
speed and landing distance. I'm about 250lbs and with 15deg flaps and
no VGs I stall around 40mph. With the VGs, around 35mph--nice.
Now the caution. (I don't know if this is the proper way to do do a STOL landing,
but it works for me.) Come in over the power lines rather steep with flaps
and holding about 45mph with no power. I aim about 50 feet before my threshold,
so that after the flair, I touchdown very close to the threshold. Even after
so many landings, I am still a little wary landing toward those trees.
Well with the trees growing fast, I forgot I changed the stall speed and just finish
the approach as usual; at about 5 feet high I pull the stick full aft, nudge
the throttle, and settle gently to the ground. Well...this time I was 10mph
over stall speed when I hit the 5 foot mark. I pulled the stick all the way
back as usual--the 701 climbs with VGs and 10mph of extra airspeed. I quickly
found myself at 10 feet and zero airspeed. Fortunately the 701 stalls like
a pancake thanks to the slats, so I didn't end up like a giant lawn dart; I
just bounced on all three tires once and ended up stopped on the threshold.
I only bent the front axle, and bruised my ego. I measured the dents in the grass,
and found I now only needed 10 feet of runway! The new axle was less than
$10, so another 500 landings would be about $5,000. After fixing the axle and
a little more practice, I'm now landing in around 150 feet--I'm OK with that.
Happy landings,
Jeff

Subject: | Need help with Matco wheel disassembly |
I have just purchased a set of Matco wheels for my 701, and since they previously
saw service, I would like to disassemble them for cleaning, and verification.
However after having removed the axles, brakes, and bolts holding the two wheel
halves together, I can't seem to pry them out of the tire. Is there any
safe or easy way to remove them without damaging the wheel half, of the tire itself.?
I was tempted to get out the BFH and the pry bar, but I'm sure some one on the
list must surely have gone through the process before me.
A big thank you, to those of you who will take the time to respond to my concerns.

Bolt them back together, break the beads lose, then unbolt them. They
will pull apart easily. Harbor Freight sells a small wheel bead
breaker. It is used mainly for ATV or motorcycle tires, but works well
on any small wheel. Part# 98875-OVGA, $19.95. That's how I did mine.
Or you can take them to a ATV shop, they shouldn't charge much. Take
care, Larry, N1345L
