Jake, If you havent gotten one yet you should get the FAA Publication 43.13-2B, Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Alterations. Its the bible for A&P mechanics to do repair and maintenance on certified aircraft. In it you should find information for acceptable repair methods for sheet metal and anything else you might find in aircraft. If you cant find it at your local pilot shop you can get it at Aircraft Spruce or Sportys. This is a 2-inch thick repair and maintenance bible for aircraft that everyone building an airplane should have on the bench when they are working on the project. Chane, Left and right, both inboard and outboard sections, should be mirror images of each other. Obviously the slat brackets on the wing should determine where the slots should be. You can clamp the slat sections to the wing to determine the exact amount to overlap the inboard and outboard skins. I had a very early kit. I think Ben and I started about the same time, and I just followed the instructions as to where to make the slots, instead of measuring between the slat brackets on the wing. Like Ben, when I went to join the inner and outer sections, I found that the skins were not long enough (either from the outboard slot on the inboard section to the outboard edge of the skin, or from the inboard slot on the outboard section to the inboard edge of the skin, or both) to overlap a sufficient distance to provide correct edge distance for the rivets joining the two together. So I trimmed the skins to butt together rather than overlap, and made about a 2.5" wide splice piece which fits an inch and a quarter into the ends of both sections where they butt together. Are you sure you don't have three right skins? John On Sat, Nov 7, 2009 at 7:22 PM, akskydiver <akskydiver@yahoo.com> wrote: > Looking for some help on my slats. Les: I am concerned about the prop clearance with my 701 and am considering adding the block to the end of the nose gear strut to increase prop clearance. I would imagine that the 8" nose wheel would result in increased prop clearance. Do you know if anyone has just added the 8" nose gear to increase prop clearance? I would guess that it might result in nose gear first landings but that is pure speculation. Chane, I built a 701 from scratch in 94 and the right and left skins before bending could be identical. To bend, you flip one over bend them and should have one for each side. If they are bent and are identical then you have a problem unless ZAC has made major changes to the wing design. John, =0AThe kit now comes with two precut slots in each slat skin.- The manual says the short skin is the inboard skin.- I have both short sectio ns completed and the one long section I have completed fits the left short section and left wing.- I'm trying to figure out if it is possible-the skins I-have are all-right skins, but I can't make the slots match up t o the right wing or slat section.- I have even thought about trying to ma ke the short section the outboard.- The problem comes from the distance f rom the edge to the third slot.- The manual says to measure the distance between the middle wing brackets and slid the slat sections together to mat ch it.- With skins I have the distance is about 200mm too short.- I kee p coming up with the same thing, I have three left skins.=0A=0ACarl, The sk ins come prebent with the holes prepunched and slots cut from the factory. - And I came up with the same thing you did, the left and right don't mir ror eachother.- I was just reaching for straws on an easy/I don't want to wait for another skin fix.- =0A=0AThanks for the responses...=0A=0AChane =0A=0A=0A-=0A=0A=0A=0A________________________________=0AFrom: John Swart out <jgswartout@gmail.com>=0ATo: zenith701801-list@matronics.com=0ASent: Su n, November 8, 2009 9:45:59 AM=0ASubject: Re: Zenith701801-List: 801 Slats =0A=0A=0AChane,=0A=0ALeft and right, both inboard and outboard sections, sh ould be mirror images of each other.- Obviously the slat brackets on the wing should determine where the slots should be.--You can clamp the sla t sections to the wing to determine the exact amount to overlap the inboard and outboard skins.- I had a very early kit.- I think-Ben and I star ted about the same time, and I just followed the instructions as to where t o make the slots, instead of measuring between the slat brackets on the win g.- Like Ben, when I went to join the inner and outer sections, I found t hat the skins were not long enough (either-from the outboard-slot-on the inboard section-to the outboard edge of the skin, or-from the inboa rd slot on the outboard section to the inboard edge of the skin, or both) -to overlap a sufficient distance to provide correct edge distance for th e rivets joining the two together.- So I-trimmed the skins to butt toge ther rather than overlap, and made about a 2.5" wide-splice piece which fits an inch and a quarter int o the ends of both sections where they butt together.=0A=0AAre you sure you don't have-three right skins?=0A=0AJohn=0A=0A=0AOn Sat, Nov 7, 2009 at 7 :22 PM, akskydiver <akskydiver@yahoo.com> wrote:=0A=0ALooking for some help on my slats.- I just finished both sections of the left slat and the rig ht inboard section.- The right and left inboard slat skins and ribs are d ifferent.- My question, just to make sure I'm not going crazy is:- Are the outboard right and left skins supposed to be different too? -The reas on I am asking is because-my kit came with-two identical outboard slat skins.- I thought this was wrong so I talked to zenith and had them send me a right skin.- I opened it up today and it looks just like the other t wo.- Did they send me another left skin?- If they are supposed to be th e same, i'm having trouble figuring out how to make the mounting brackets m atch my right wing using the precut slots for the slat mounting brackets. - My guess is, I have two extra left skins and no right skin.- If I am reading the manual wrong, can someone point me in the right direction?=0A> =0A>Any help will be greatly appreciated.=0A>=0A>Thanks=0A>=0A>Chane-Burk =0A>N801Z reserved=0A>Everything but half of one slat built on the airframe - =0A>=0A> "_blank">www.aeroelectric.com .com/" target="_blank">www .buildersbooks.com ="_blank">www.homebuilthelp.com _blank">http://www.m atronics.com/contribution ist" target="_blank">http://www.matronics.com/ ========== =0A=0A=0A

Stan, I'm the wrong guy to ask. Suggest you call the factory or read what Sebastien had to say at http://www.zenith.aero/profiles/blogs/testing-larger-bushwheel-tires. I went over a little hilly area on a grass field last year and dented in my prop tip, costing $300 to repair (Warpdrive), so I worry a little about this. But maybe we worry too much. For example, On the way home to Cloverdale Ca. from Copper State, in Nevada, Doug Dugger mangled the tips of his prop on his 701 in a dust devil. Doug is very resourceful. Rather than worry how to get home he simply took a hack saw, carefully cut over an inch from the three blades on his prop, and kept going. So a "light" prop strike does not necessarily have to shut you down.
