Subject: | 701 Max Flap Extension Speed |
FYI 701 pilots:
This last weekend I was practicing short field takeoffs. I deployed the
flaps (have only one setting at 15 degrees) and had a good takeoff.
After the takeoff I got distracted by the radio or scenery or who knows
what and proceeded to fly to my first destination. After a couple of
minutes, I noticed that my trim tab did not seem to be working correctly
as it was not in the normal position for high speed cruise i.e. 90 mph.
Then it dawned on my that the flaps were still deployed and I was
cruising at 90 well over the flap extension limit of 65 mph. I slowed
the plane down, raised the flaps and everything returned to normal.
During the short time the flaps were deployed at high speed, the plane
did not exhibit any bad behavior. There was no flutter, shaking or
anything else alarming. On landing, I looked over the flaperons closely
and there was no signs of stress.
I am sure I am not the only one who has ever done this but I don't
remember seeing it here so I thought I would mention it.

Dan,
I think that we all have left the flaps extended at cruise speed and I hear
nothing about damaged gear caused by this. In fact I fly for hours at 70-MPG
when I'm with the slower planes in my club and keep about 10-degrees of
flaps so that the nose stays down for visibility.
FYI, I really like the Quality Sport Planes flap handle, which allows for
finger tip lowering to 5-10-15-and 20 degrees of flap.
Les

Dan I'm impressed with your frank honesty. So many people today act lick it a great
sin to be honest about making a mistake. I guess they dont think they are
lying when they refuse to admit a mistake. Ive done it more than once and the
dead give away to the mistake is I cant get to normal cruse. She just seems slow
and sluggish for the amount of power applied. Im impressed you got to 90-MPH.

Subject: | Elevator Cables Again |
I'm stumped. When I tried to tighten my elevator cables for the first time, the
stick started to bind when I moved it to the right. I could not find where it
was binding for the life of me. Then, I discovered that the cables actually tighten
up as the stick is moved right thus creating what felt like binding. The
elevator up and down motion is fine. To the stops in both directions.
So to further explain; If I move the stick to the left, both cables become loose,
when I move it to the right, both tighten. Makes no difference where the stick
is in the up/down motion, the result is the same.
I got Caleb on the phone and he gave me the cable tension; 20# + or- 5# but I can't
get close to 20# without the cables tightening and limiting movement to the
right. Hope I explained this OK, and really hope one of you guys has a helpful
hint. One of those days for sure!

Art,
This topic has been brought up before, (at least on the Yahoo group).
The reason is the elevator control is offset to the right side of the plane. Then
as you rotate the control to the right, the distance between the control and
the elevator horns becomes shorter, hence, it gets tighter. Then the opposite
for moving the control to the left.
I am trying to find a photo that I found what somebody did, was to add an offset
to the lower part of the bellcrank 7C1-1 (I think)
I will post when I find it.
