Kevin I built from plan in 94 and designed my own flip-ups because they are easier to deal with while docking on floats. Also two of my friends who built from kits had issues with their swing doors interfering with the wing strut. I agree with the disadvantages you listed. I resently installed buble doors. They do increse elbow room, are more riggid and look nicer. However they may create low preasure areas under the wing (not good for lift) and increase drag. I have not been able to prove this as I foolishly destroyed my old doors. The reason I mentioned the interference with the strut is that I saw a CH701 with a notch out of the lower rear corner of the door. It looked like it was there so the door would clear the strut. This door mod created a gap when the door was closed. It looked like an afterthought. Curt

The Bearhawk has the same problem, Barrows designed a little hinged alum.flap to clear the strut and seal the door. I have a set of Bearhawk drawings, if anyone gets really serious about going this way I'll dig out that drawing for them. Lets remember that in the earlier-kits, there were less parts "factory cu t" or "factory predrilled"- so much were actually made the "fun way" (tra cing from plans to the sheet of aluminum).- This way there was always a little chance of not making the part exactly to fit...---Remember-most of the builders-dont have enough experien ce but want to learn on the process...- Some of the non structural parts were not reapeted...- Some are not perfectionists :-) - Saludos Gary Gower 701 912S-- 280 hrs of fun and counting. --- On Tue, 12/8/09, Curt Thompson <Curt.Thompson@verizon.net> wrote: From: Curt Thompson <Curt.Thompson@verizon.net> Subject: RE: Zenith701801-List: Old swing forward doors izon.net> The reason I mentioned the interference with the strut is that I saw a CH70 1 with a notch out of the lower rear corner of the door.- It looked like it was there so the door would clear the strut.- This door mod created a gap when the door was closed.- It looked like an afterthought. Also if you check the old drawing and compare it to the new drawings... you will notice that the doors are a bit shorter on the old...
