Hello all,
I'm new to this list. I want to build a 701 or a750 , leaning towards
the 701. Its cheaper
and seems to do, on paper most everything the 750 does except a
little range, load,and
speed. The load and speed are not too important to me but I do need
long range. I fly a Kolb
Firestar 2 with a HKS engine and 200 miles is really pushing it. 55mph
cruise. I'm not sure
how much better, if any a 701 preforms --speed, comfort , noise, short
takeoff ,CLIMB,range etc.
If someone on this list is familiar with both A/C I would really
appreciate your thoughts.
I'm thinking about a jabiru 2200 engine and would like to hear from
anyone that knows anything
about this engine and or 2200 701 combo.
I'm retired and this will likely be the last plane I build so I
would sure like to get it right.
Any thoughts , ideas, comments ,or suggestions will help me to make
the right decision . Thanks.

Frank, I am 90/90% on a scratch 701 project. I am also helping a friend kit build
his 750 Tail kit. I have done demo flights in both factory planes. If I
were starting over today, knowing what I know. I would likely build the 750.
The 701 is a great plane but the 750 is just a little better. The only thing
the 701/912S combo has is a little better short takeoff performance. I don't
know how the 2200 compares to the 912S.
Since you say cost is an issue. You can usually get good mid time O-200s for between
$6000.00 to $10000.00. That will save you significantly on a 750 and tends
to level the field with the 701/2200 choice.
Hope this helps

I agree with Doug. That extra gross and usefulo weight, while keeping it in
the Sport Pilot range, would be nice. I love my 701 and am discovering new
things that it'll do every day. If I were going to start right now,
though, I'd probably go with the 750.

Frank,
My 701/Rotax 912ULS was completed in early 2008. I like the extra cabin
space and visibility in the 750, but my thinking is that this is all you get
for the extra bucks. You say range is an issue in the 701. I flew from San
Francisco to Oshkosh this year and range was not at issue. I can stay in the
air for 7-hours at a clip with my optional wing tanks (40-gallons total) and
a jar to piss into. In addition, the 701 is a fully tested design and I
really enjoy getting into very small strips with it.

I started a 701 plans built in 2008. OK, I got some under the table rib stuff for
the rudder in 2007... to find out if I really wanted to build from plans.
Well its a little later and I now have the rudder, stab and elevator done. I also
have the wing ribs, the aileron ribs and the aileron spar, cabin sides and
a couple of other odds and ends. No it is not like building from a kit, but I
like it and considering the personal and family issues that have happened along
the way, I have to say this is an easy plans build.... ( it is my first so I
really don't know, but it really is pretty easy with all the support out there).
As for the 750, yup a FEW extra lbs usable, wider, taller, more available engines
a little faster as I remember? So if I were building from a kit, starting right
now, I'd order a 750. But the kit was never in the budget with 2 kids about
to enter college.... And the only down side for me in building the 701 is the
oil canning... so add some stiffeners!
Now having said that I am 170 lbs and 5'8", the wife is 5'2" and 1XX lbs... sorry
I like my life. We are not big people , If I were a heavy weight, the 750 would
be the ticket, plans or kit.
Hope this helps
