    On this subject of over cooling the oil, has anyone tried or are using a thermostatic bypass valve ? The oil temp would be regulated within a range that would be suitable in all conditions. I remember seeing this used in the automotive aftermarket. The valve was located in the oil filter mounting adapter and maintains 180 degree oil temp, no shutters needed.     Don, I installed a oil thermostat that I bought from Lockwood. The oil temperature gets of to 180 deg. in about 10 minutes even on very cold winter days here in Vermont. It also maintains 180 deg. when flying in temperatures that are in the minus numbers, something that I don't think would be possible without it.     OK you Gurus of 701; I'm in a quandary on two points: One - when you figure the elevator deflection up and down. Do you start from neutral on the top of the elevator and use an electronic level? Or do you (if your using a level) start from a line from the hinge pin - center of rotation - to the center of the trailing edge. Don't want to build the jig as shown on Zenith drawings if I don't have to. Now the next question - when mounting the horizontal stabilizer to the fuselage it shows a dimension of 135 mm from the top of the spar - front and rear - to an A-E reference line. If I do this the lower elevator horn seems to have a lot of interference to the upper rudder mounting plate. It shows to "cut out the offending area" but that would really "bite" into the elevator horn structure in my situation. Can you mount the stab higher to aviod some of this or what. Is there a trick that I can't seem to resolve - let me know ASAP - I've already spent the morning in the shop trying to sort this out. Thanks Phil 701 - Buhl ID - only a few more bolts

    I had the same quandary, but it all worked out in the end. Mounting the horiz. stab. too high will cause problems later when you install the cables. There won't be adequate clearance and you'll end up cutting the hole in the front of the stab. lower. One of the guys that responded to my problem here advised me NOT to alter the elevator horn but rather make accommodations with the L angle that it interferred with and that was the right solution. I just added a backer to the angle and cut out for clearance. I made the top of the Horizontal Stab. parallel to the AE line and then measured my elevator deflections from the top of the stabilizer. The guys here told me that I'll never see full down deflection anyway so not to worry about it. They were right and it all worked itself out. It is like a whole series of small compromises, none too radical, and making sure you are looking far enough ahead before you make a cut or drill a hole.     Subject: 701 with Jabiru
    I have no first-hand experience with Jabiru, but at AirVenture met a guy who said he runs a big flying school Australia. He told me that he had to pull out the Jabiru engines from all of his planes because of bad performance and because Jabiru did not standing behind their product. I think he said that they were 100 or 120 HP, but am not certain of this.     Subject: How to install the cowling sink plates?

    There are some details lacking in the Zenith instructions for the new style FFW cowling install. ;-) I have my cowling clecoed on, but am not sure about how to use the sink plates. Based on the instructions/HBH video, it seems like the process is this: 1) Get the cowling positioned and clecoed together. 2) Drill out the forward four holes where the split pieces join A) to AN5 on the top piece ( to let the washers rest "counter sunk" ) B) to AN3 on the bottom piece 3) Attach the nutplates to the bottom half. So based on this I have a few questions 1) How do I keep the cowling lip as nicely aligned as I have it now? I would guess that since the holes are a little large that there is some slack. 2) Since the recieving shaft of the nutplate is larger than AN3, I will assume that the plate gets riveted to the inside. What is the best procedure for drilling the holes for the rivets without loosing alignment? 3) I am supposed to countersink the rivets for the nutplate. How do you countersink thin fiberglass like this? Making a dimple seems like a bad idea. Using a drilling reamer/countersink seems worse. The directions call for the holes to be enlarged to #30, but not which rivets to use. The soft brass A3s fit without enlarging, but the dome head would cause a poor fit... Microsoft has a really awesome utility available for free that allows you to Right-Click on a picture in Explorer and automatically scale it down and resave it. This would seem to go without saying, but I'll say it anyway. Do not post anything that would be considered offensive by your grandmother. And you know what I'm saying; I don't want to see anything even questionable. !! 4) REMEMBER THIS: If you post a 1MB enclosure to a List with 1000 members subscribed, your 1MB enclosure must be resent 1000 times amounting to 1MB X 1000 = 1 Gigabyte of network traffic!! BE CAREFUL and BE COURTEOUS!
