George Race did a modification to his so the elevator cables would not cross. It can be seen here starting at picture 294: http://www.mrrace.com/mykitairplane/MyCH701/Building%20My%20CH-701/index.htm Craig Moore A&P Mancelona, MI Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=281273#281273

Zenith builders: Geoff Heap said: Votes are coming in. Ameri-king seems to be in the lead but what models have you purchased. The 450 is 121MHz and therefore pointless. All 451's are 406MHz The 451-2 is a little under $1000. It has no GPS and is accurate to 1-2 kilometers. the 451-? with GPS is at least twice the price. However I don't think it actually has a GPS unit inside it. Reading about it I see that they offer an interface only for the extra cost. The only GPS I can find where they actually state that THERE IS AN ACTUAL GPS INSIDE. NO NEED FOR AN INTERFACE HERE is the one craig mentioned. Aircraft spruce 406 ELT W/ INTERNAL GPS 11-08053 $1360. So Craig. your Artex ME406 is listed at $1949. can you throw some light on this? what do you get for that much. Is it just the interface to connect to your panel mount GPS. I did call Ameri-king and was told that the 451-2 ($764) has no GPS and no interface. Unless someone corrects me it seems like my choice is between the 451-2 with no GPS and accuracy of 1-2 kilometers OR the 406 ELT W/ INTERNAL GPS 11-08053 $1360 from spruce. BTW the "ELT" in the last sentence is the brand name of the unit. "Emerging Lifesaving Technologies" I believe there is another option for an ELT that no one has mentioned-the ACK model E-04. I ordered mine from Aircraft Spruce. It is $582 plus shipping. It operates on 121.5 Mhz and 406.037 Mhz so has no UHF receiving capability. Aircraft Spruce indicated shipment would be in December but it has not yet arrived. More information on the E-04 can be found at www.ackavionics.com. Stan Challgren 701/3300

    Subject: My Torque Tube mods
I think I'm nearly done with my 7C2-2 torque tube mods to create a stationary horizontal tail bellcrank (7C1-1). Still need to paint. Here is a link to some pictures of it: http://s231.photobucket.com/albums/ee150/charlievictor102/CH701%20Modified%2 0Torque%20Tube/ The password is "airplane" Here is what I did: 1. I cut the Torque Tube (7C2-2) in half and trimmed off about 20mm from the rear end. 2. I replaced the Rear Torque Tube Bearing (7F6-2) with an equivalent piece of 4130N 0.050 sheet. 3. I welded the rear part of the cut Torque Tube to the new steel 7F6-2. 4. I machined a new tube that fits inside of the Torque Tube. Using the lathe I turned down a 4130N 1.125"x0.083"x0.959" tube so that it fitted inside the Torque Tube. I had to use some valve lapping compound to knock off the bumps from the welds in the Torque Tube. 5. At the rear end of this inside tube, I welded a new place similar to 7C2-3. 6. I machined a nylon spacer to go over the inside tube. 7. When the assembly is put together, the inside tube is bolted to the front part of the original Torque Tube. 8. I made a new Pitch Control Rod (7C1-3) so I could attach CW-5-12 rod ends to both ends. So now when the control stick is moved left/right the location of the Horizontal Tail Bellcrank (7C1-1) does not move. I should be able to keep the elevator cables pretty tight and not have the tightness change as I move the aileron. Also, I should not have to worry about the cables interfering. All academic at this point since I haven't actually flown it yet. Thanks to Robert Pelland who posted pictures here about a month ago. I got some ideas from his pictures.
