Jimmy, I once ordered a new panel for a Piper aircraft that arrived with a large bend and dent. I went to a old car restoration shop that did custom hot rod work and asked them if they could help me out. The owner looked at the piece and said no problem. We went to the back of his shop where he had a big English Wheel. He proceeded to fix the panel like new. It took him all of about 3 minuets and did not charge me anything. When I ran a slat into the barn door I couldn't get the entire dent out. The more I worked at it the worse it looked. Rather than replace the slat I simply put a rectangular patch of .016 skin over the dent with a few rivets. It looks a lot better than the dent did. Anyone have any ideas? I might try the heating/dry ice cooling thing. It wouldn't do any harm I guess. I always wonder if heavier aluminum on the leading edge might help to prevent some of those dings. After all, we are not flying at mach speeds. Still, more weight..... ----- Original Message ----- From: "George Race" <mykitairplane@mrrace.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 1:56 PM Subject: RE: Zenith701801-List: dent removal question > <mykitairplane@mrrace.com> > > Hi Jimmy: > > After you get as much as you can with the "spoon" technique try heating > the > area up around the dent, including the dent, and then using dry ice, > rubbing > it across the dent, will sometimes shrink the metal enough to remove the > "Soft" dents.
