Subject: wheel pants for 701 - horses for courses
    From: Peter Thomson <peterlthomson@gmail.com>
I fly my 701/912ULS slats off, VG's on, with wheel pants, as a touring aircraft. At 4800rpm and 18l/hr, it cruises at 100mph+ The pants are pretty massive as tyres are Michelin 8.00x6 6ply a/c tyres. but the pants certainly take some drag off the system. They were a one-off build and I suspect that most would need to go that way. Peter

Hello, all I don't know if this is applicable to the 701/801/750, but Larry McFarland has an elegant approach to the problem (he built a CH601-HDS): http://www.macsmachine.com/images/controllinkages/full/steer-rod-air-barrier.gif Larry's site: http://www.macsmachine.com Carlos > ----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger Wibbels" <rogwibb@yahoo.com> > To: <Zenith701801-List@matronics.com> > Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2010 7:02 PM > > Subject: Zenith701801-List: Firewall Steering rod holes > > >> > >> >> Does anyone have a good solution for plugging the steering rod holes. Hi Roger: It IS a firewall, and I just don't think the rubber boots that people are using fit the purpose, other than keeping out air and exhaust. I made some nomex boots, and just in case they weren't airtight enough (which I think they were) I coated the inside with "tent sure" (a urethane paint made for sealing tents). This is a picture from my 601 which has been sold.........Fred Sanford N9701 Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=304912#304912 Attachments: http://forums.matronics.com//files/boots_612.jpg

True statement Fred. My concern was carbon monoxide poisoning. Fire is a whole different story......Ralph Sharp N701SA ----- Original Message ----- From: <sonar1@cox.net> Sent: Thursday, July 15, 2010 8:47 AM Subject: Zenith701801-List: Re: Firewall Steering rod holes > > Hi Roger: > It IS a firewall, and I just don't think the rubber boots that people are > using fit the purpose, other than keeping out air and exhaust. > I made some nomex boots, and just in case they weren't airtight enough > (which I think they were) I coated the inside with "tent sure" (a urethane > paint made for sealing tents). My boots are stuffed with ceramic wool. It takes 3000+ degrees to get it to burn. By that time you have lost the cowling, windscreen and any oth er flammable part between you and the motor. do not archive Ben Haas N801BH www.haaspowerair.com ---------- Original Message ---------- From: "sonar1@cox.net" <sonar1@cox.net> Subject: Zenith701801-List: Re: Firewall Steering rod holes t> Hi Roger: It IS a firewall, and I just don't think the rubber boots that people ar e using fit the purpose, other than keeping out air and exhaust.
