I have built a short saw horse to support the fusalage. I expected I would mark the holes with a sharpie, then center-punch them and drill them on the ground to avoid slopping the aluminum holes. I'll go to Harbor Freight and get an Angle drill tonight. I have bought 2x4's to build a support for the wing. Thank you very much for all your help. -------- Ernest Jessee N4931M Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=307795#307795 ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 01:23:33 PM PST US From: Ryan Vechinski Subject: RE: Zenith701801-List: Re: Riveting wing skeleton Thanks for the heads up! Subject: Zenith701801-List: Re: Riveting wing skeleton From: ruruny@aol.com My fuel tanks=2C main and aux on each wing=2C had a lip where the welding w as done. It was a pain to remove and install them. You can rivet the entire skeleton=2C but I left clecos in the rear channels behind the tank and the channels that are right behind the tank/tanks. Just made things easier. I ordered one from Zenith, had it shipped next day air, and will have it painted tonight for installation on Saturday morning at KJFZ. I am not the builder, so I am not intimately familiar with the attachment of the piece. I have a few questions I would appreciate help with. My name is Steve Kurash, I have built from plans a 701, and have replaced the wing strut fittings in order to re-paint them when they began to rust. For a builder of the aircraft, this is definitely a doable project, but is not an easy one; remembering that this fitting actually holds the wing onto the airframe, it is also a very important part! As builders of experimental aircraft, we have/have the ability to apply for, a repairman's certificate that allows us to repair or maintain the airframe and engine, while buyers of used or professionally assembled experimental aircraft are not allowed that privilege. It has been my observation that the member's of this list are always eager to assist a builder with anything at all they are struggling with, and this is what the list is all about. But, we as a group need to be mindful of the FAA regulations that require a repairman's certificate in order for any owner of an experimental aircraft to perform repairs and maintenance. Earnest, please seek the services of an A&P to accomplish your repairs. It's the law, and it is designed to protect you. Respectfully, Steve Kurash Plans built 701 Planning underway for the plans building of a 750 with Corvair power. ________________________________ Message 5 _____________________________________ Time: 04:04:37 PM PST US From: rayj Subject: Re: Zenith701801-List: RE: Zenith701801-List Digest: 7 Msgs - 08/05/10 Steve, What are you advocating? That we check to be sure no one on the list might break the law with anything they might learn on the list? We don't know whether or not Earnest may be working with an A&P, or might be an A&P and not familiar with Zenith designs. This is the internet. How would we go about verifying anything? Many on this list are outside the U.S. and are not subjected to the F.A.A.'s regulation. I would rather help someone repair an airplane correctly than have them repair it incorrectly. Let the information flow freely and let Earnest make whatever decision he choses about the legal aspects of his situation. I purchased my manual rivet puller from Zenith. Bought a close-quarters right angel drill at Harbor Freight for $29 -- it will surely last long enough to install the fitting. I'll take my rechargeable Dewalt just in case. Thanks again all for your help. I'll be in touch. I'm leaving for Va at 4AM tomorrow morning. -------- Ernest Jessee N4931M Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=307816#307816 ________________________________ Message 7 _____________________________________ Time: 05:22:08 PM PST US Subject: Re: Zenith701801-List: Re: replacing a strut fitting From: Ernest E Jessee Thanks Steve, The riveter I have was purchased from Zenith. It's just that only an A&P Mechanic or holder of the Repairman's Certificate can do the annual conditional inspection.
