Subject: | Re: Main gear spacer failure -- a happy ending |
Thanks again for all your kind words and as always, for your help.
I am planning to replace the prop at my next conditional as it will be close to
its 5 year tbo and will also have close to 500 hours on it. It has never spent
any time outside... not even this past week as KJFZ bunked it in a corporate
hangar with the owners permission
Someone pointed out that I didn't show the fitting that I replaced nor the damaged
fitting.
As for the damaged fitting, not much to see. I cut it up for patterns to place
the new holes and thus can't show a picture now. You will see in the picture
that he plane is tilted to the right. This is how she scooted the last several
feet and thus severely bent the bolts on the right strut fitting. When I streightened
them, they then had stress fractures.
Here is a picture of the replaced fitting. Oh.... I guess I was amiss in saying
"no scratches". You will see where the tire rubbed the strut. I did a careful
inspection of the strut during the repair as well as the strut attachments
to the wing. The strut was not bent, and there was no hole elongation at the
attachment points. None of the rivets had moved enough to even crack the paint.
Aside from that, As soft as these tires are, I don't believe that tire rubbing
would cause any issues. Any opinions other wise?
I have also included a fairly bad pic of the belly. Lighting is bad but look at
it! I still am amazed.
