When I first got mine I shot a coat of rattle-can paint on it to keep the rust down as I get frost in my "shop" through the Winter, and of course as I was fitting the "Front Top Skin" off and on it chipped off the paint. Now at this point, I can still take the Cabin Frame apart, what have others been doing. I don't know if I can justify spending $250+ dollars on White Epoxy Primer. Have others finished building, and then painted?? Thanks, Keith CH701 - scratch (mostly except for 4130 welded parts) N 38.9940 W 105.1305 Alt. 9,100' ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 07:01:40 AM PST US From: "Robert N. Eli" Subject: Re: Zenith701801-List: Cabin Frame 7F18-1SP Painting Keith, I have the same question. I have an older full kit, so the 4130 parts are all pre-welded, but in a "raw" metal state. Luckily, I have a heated/air-conditioned shop, and the raw metal has not developed rust. I will add to your inquiry with regard to the painting of the exterior, with a question about how are others protecting the interior of the welded tubing parts after the painting is done? Our airport was closed by the State of Alabama because it no longer met minimum runway requirements, so we are moving to another (more expensive) airport. Rent is going from $30 a month to $100 monthly. I'm busy working on the Kitfox SS and hope to be finished sometime this year. We bought a used O200 for it and are in the process of overhauling it now. Headed to SNF next week to scout out some parts at the vendor and exchange hangars. When we painted our 4130 steel parts on both 701s, we scuffed them with those unmentionable scotch pads, then shot them with several coats of rattle can primer. After they cured for a month or so, I began to spray rattle can paint on them, waiting several days between coats. It seemed to work ok, but if I had it to do again I might have used an expoxy primer because it sticks so much better. Take care and if you back in Bama, stop by, I will show you a Kitfox being built. Too bad about the airport closing. That seemed like a nice little out-of-the-way airport. Was it State owned or private? It seems like if it was Private then it should still be open, but every state is different. I have been trying to get an airport here in Teller County, since there isn't even 1 private strip here in the county. It seems like there are more Pros than Cons for this area, but the County is not easy to work with. Pros -- close to ski resorts that do not have an airport close to them except Denver or Colorado Springs. Gambling in Cripple Creek, Staging areas for Forest Fires, etc.... Anyway, I will do the cleaning of the 4130 and then shoot the primer and rattle can paint for now. When it is done you can scuff off the brushmarks with some 1000+ grit sandpaper and wet sanding. It will have a dull shine to it but look wonderful and be very hardy to scuff marks and wear. PS. we always paint interiors in gray - darker is usually hot in the summer and lighter will show handprints, etc. -jim pantas http://www.wildhorsesracing.com ________________________________ From: Keith Ashcraft Sent: Sun, March 27, 2011 9:20:58 AM Subject: Zenith701801-List: Cabin Frame 7F18-1SP Painting All, I am at the point of getting ready to rivet the cabin together, but.... what have others been doing about primering/painting the Cabin Frame?
