Flew it for 3 years and had too much fun flying it to bring it in to paint it. My pet peeve is the various types of masking tape. I've tried the brown stuff, the blue stuff (the papery kinds from 3M) and have a terrible time unrolling the tape from the roll without it tearing off irregularly causing me to spend a couple minutes and and a fingernail or two to start unrolling it again. Start again and it rips off 1/4 way through what you need. I painted two airplanes before and never had this problem! I plan to use fine line tape for paint edges, but whenever I use regular masking tape the stuff drives me nuts! Am I doing something wrong? How hard can it be to simply unroll tape?? I've been tempted to try soften the glue on it by hitting it with a heat gun before unrolling it. Tried new stuff from various auto body supply places, etc. Any experts out there? I have had the same experience as you - you have to unroll the tape slowly, but it will still happen. Also, if you leave it on for too long, (months), it will *not* unstick easily, and paint thinner will be required to remove the goo left behind. If you are working in any colder than that the stuff will give you a lot of trouble. There may be other reasons as well, maybe someone else will have a better answer. If you puchase tape at a firm which sells a LOT of painting supplies then the tape you get is likely fresh and will work as advertised. Outlets where tape has been on the shelf for months should be avoided. Any local automotive paint shop could advise you; probably offer other tips as well. Some years ago I had a roll of 'worlds largest retailer' tape that was only six months old.... It would not unroll one complete round without tearing, and the 'sticky' was mush! Buy GOOD tape! Body shop near my office was happy to offer advice when I told of the problem.
