Guys. Please tell me what rubber channel you are using at the bottom edge of your windshields. The U channel sold by ASSCO is all 1/16 slotted. Our 701 acrylic windshields are 1/8 thick. They also an Open center channel 05-01500 with a 1/8 slot but it is a Y shaped channel and too long. They have other High quality rubber channel but again, it's slotted 1/16. So throw me a bone hereGeoff -------- Dual controls. Dynon 180. Icom 210 Garmin 296. Becker transponder. Sigtronics intercom. Electric flaperons. Look here..http://www.mcmaster.com/#rubber-trim/=buiwhs Style 5,6 or 7 will all work, Pick the one you like best. On my 801 I no t only used the rubber channel trim I fabricated an aluminum strip piece that hid that joint too. You can see it in this pic... I used body stripe tape on both the 701s I built. Worked fine. On Tue, Apr 12, 2011 at 3:06 PM, Geoff Heap <stol10@comcast.net> wrote: > > > Guys. I used some of that trim tape as suggested by Zenith in their plans. I flew the plane for three years then am now painting it as we speak/type. The tape looked OK initially but was starting to come off, so I took the bull by the horns and fiberglassed mine in like the RV builders do. It looks good, even with my less than perfect construction talents, and will seal really well and forever. Also, I suspect I will probably gain at least 0.0028057 knots in cruise by doing it. It took me an entire week to do it and sanding down the fiberglass till it is almost flush with the window and knife edge thickness is as tedious as brain surgery! Would I do it again? Probably, but only if I had at least a week of time to kill and I didn't have a case of "want to get it done and flying as soon as possible" like I had the first time around. Just spent 10 hours non stop yesterday cleaning and etching the plane, not counting a day masking and sealing off the openings and doors the day before and sprayed primer on it today. Just got done. So far looks good! Using the Steward waterborn 2 part poyurethane system. One question regarding rubber strips. Does anyone put them along the inboard top wing fairings? Someone told me I should do that so the vibration of the fairings against the plexiglass roof won't wear through. I don't know if this is right or not, though. In three years of flying there isn't even a scratch on the plexiglass, except where I screwed up by dropping things on it, but thats another "Bob Goofed UP" story!. -----Original Message----- From: Ralph Sharp Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2011 3:48 PM Subject: Re: Zenith701801-List: Windshield rubber channel I got mine from Aircraft Spruce. Bob, I initially cut rubber strips to go on my wingroot farings but never installed them. The 1/8 inch slot in the rubber was too big and they ended up with some primer overspray on them during painting. Didn't seem worth it once I was done. I too have not noticed any indication of contact between the faring and the window so I don't plan on installing them. I think the rubber would do more damage to the window than the gap I currently have. Here I only can get (imported) =C2-the Carlisle tires, =C2-a good frien d sends them from San Diego/Tijuana... =C2-With the original tires, lots of hours ago I had problems with flats... =C2-I use them tubless (o ring) . =C2-I found the solution getting some =C2- green geek (the non pressu rized one) inside the tires, there are very much used in off road motorcycl es to prevent flats around here... =C2-Problem gone =C2-(Very Happy Pil ot :-) =C2-=C2- I just installed a new (main) set of tires about 40 hours ago, =C2-with t he green thing inside since new. Yes they ended with "some" unbalance =C2- but glad is a STOL aircraft :-) =C2-so at that landing and take off speeds and over bumpy grass, I hardl y note it... =C2- Also what ever passenger complains, will not get anothe r free flight :-) =C2-:-) If you want my point of view: =C2-Even if I had the chance to install mor e expensive tires, I rather spend the money in flying gasoline rather than taxing tires....=C2-=C2-The original tires lasted a little past 300 hrs of mostly "touch and Goes", =C2-because lots of friends enjoy flying in our 701... They are the same tire th at=C3=A2=82=AC=84=A2s being marketing under two names. I talked to Ma tco about their tire and it was the Carlisle brand at the time we spoke. As Paul said it=C3=A2=82=AC=84=A2s the Turf Glide model. I looked aroun d and found them from $50 to $65 in the aircraft industry, but I got mine f rom my local Big Brand Tire store for $45 each and no shipping. They are ju st golf cart trailer tires, nothing special. As for the quality Phil, you =C3=A2=82=AC=84=A2re quite right, it=C3=A2=82=AC=84=A2s POOR. N ot only are the construction variables all over the place so is the weight. My nose wheel and tire set-up took almost a half pound of lead to balance. My last grip is they are really THIN. I can out to fly last Monday and a m ain was flat. Upon close inspection I found a household thumb-tack in the t ire. It had pierced the tire and the tube. Repair was straight forward but, I do a lot of dirt field landings with all so! rt of rocks, green stuff, branches and who knows what else laying around t hat could puncher such a thin tire. Getting stuck in the bush with a simple flat is not a fun repair. OK enough gripping. I like the look and the gene ral function of the tire, but is there a better, more dependable back count ry tire out there? What else have your guys tried?
