Subject: | Advanced Ultralight vs Amateur Built in Canada |
I have a question for those canadian builders and flyers of 701's, What are
the pros and cons of registering a 701
as an advanced ultralight as opposed to Amateur Built. I have started with
the rudder and hz stabilizer partial kits
from Zenith and plan on finishing the plane buying the materials from
Zenith. If I am going to register it as an
AB I need to notify the ministry now.
I realize AU has to be built from factory supplied parts and cannot be
modified from the original design w/o the manufacturers premission. I have
started with the rudder and hz stabilizer partial kits from Zenith and plan
on finishing the plane buying the materials from Zenith.
The only modification I am considering, if it is a modification at all,
would be to put some fat Alaskan Bush Tires on it like Christopher Desmond
has on his and the roller blade wheel under the tail as he has done.
Any comments as to whether these would be a modification or not would be
appreciated.

The major drawback to going Amateur Built is having to deal with the MDRA.
=C2- They =0Aare supposed to be non-profit but they sure charge enough fo
r the paperwork and =0Ainspections.=C2- Depending on your distance from y
our inspector, this will likely =0Aadd between $1000.00 and $2000.00 to the
cost to build.=C2- That being said, I went =0AAmateur Built with my 701
and would do so again.=C2- An AB plane is a real plane.=C2- =0AAn AULA
is, lets face it, an ultralight.=C2- The same two planes sitting for sale
=0Aside by side, the AB is going to sell first.=0A=0AAnother thing I don't
like about the AULA catagory is, for the most part, it is =0Aan orphan.=C2
- Since the US finally got going on LSA/SP, there have been very few =0Ad
evelopments in the AULA catagory.=C2- Eventually LSA/SP will arrive here
in Canada =0Aand I suspect that AULA will likely end up being folded into L
SA when that =0Ahappens.=0A=0AAs you mention, since you are the manufacture
r of and AB plane, you can do =0Apretty much whatever you like to it (withi
n reason).=C2- Since Zenair will be the =0Amanufacturer listed on the dat
aplate of an AULA, they are going to err on the =0Aside of caution with reg
ard to any modifications.=0A=0AI hope these ramblings have been of some hel
p.=C2- As I said, I went AB and don't =0Aregret it.=0A=0ADoug MacDonald

Can anyone tell me why Can-Zac is no longer the zenith distributor for Ontario,Canada?Wanted
to sign up for a workshop and was informed by zenith head office
in the U.S. that I will have to contact the new distributor in Midland Ontario, which
was fine until I called them and was informed that they were not planning
any workshops in the near future.
I will probably still place my order but was just curious what happened to Can-Zac
as I know they held numerous workshops throughout the year.
Thanks.
Mike

Last I heard recently was that Mark is doing fine and is very busy doing his
Zenith builder assist work at his hangar workshop. I understand he is no
longer the Canadian Zenith distributor.
He never manufactured parts for Zenith to the best of my knowledge, so
nothing has changed in that regard. The only thing I know that is different
is that you call the Midland facility for your Zenith parts orders instead
of calling Mark.
Is he hard to get ahold of? I think so...! I have heard he is REALLY busy!
Jon (a friend of Mark's)

Ben,
Mark ( Canzac ) never had anything to do with the 801. The kit and
parts have always been are manufactured, sold, and supplied from the
original Zenith plant at the Huronia Airport, in Midland Ontario. They
can be reached on their website at www.zenair.com or e-mailed at the
following zenair.com@gmail.com
You might want to speak to Mathieu Heintz who run the business, and his
phone number is 705 526-2871.
As for Mark answering his e-mails, or his phone for that matter, it
look's as though he has too much work to do so.
