Subject: | Fuel flow test results. |
I did a nose high fuel flow test ( Rotax 912 ). I uncoupled a line right
before a carb and raised the tail until fuel stopped flowing.
The results stunned me. With 5 gallons in each wing the flow stopped at
about 15 degrees above resting. The nose was WELL below the tank fittings at
that point.
This raises several questions:
1) What is the expected attitude for fuel to stop flowing without the
mechanical pump running?
2) What is the expected attitude for fuel to stop flowing WITH the
mechanical pump running.
3) What about a nose down attitude? With the fuel fittings at the rear of
the tank a nose down attitude even with considerable fuel could cause
starvation.
The fuel system is run to plans. I used the stock tanks with the factory
fittings. The stock gascolator is being used with the position indicated by
plans.
Thanks,
John Marzulli

Were the caps on the fuel tanks? Are they vented?
If you leave the plane in a level attitude how much of your 2*5 gallons flow
out?
When you stopped was there the same amount of fuel in both tanks?
Did the flow stop completely or was it just reduced to a trickle?

Zenith tells me ).
We didn't do a full flow measurement with a meter, so the start point is
somewhat arbitrary. at fifteen degrees the fuel was fully stopped.

John, I had a similar issue when I did my fuel flow test last fall.- To g
et a =0Atrue flow value I ended up disconnecting the fuel line at the inlet
to the =0Apump.- I think I was able to get the 2X max fuel-demand up t
o about 16 degrees =0A(at 17 it dropped off significantly).- In the test
you describe, the carb ends =0Aof the hoses are lower than the tank outlets
but the fuel pump is likely at or =0Aabove the tank outlet.- That is the
one big pain about where Rotax puts-its fuel =0Apump.- Here in Canada,
fuel flow checks are manditory.- The inspector accepted =0Athe fuel chec
k at the pump because of the nature of the Rotax pump.=0A=0AKeep in mind th
at your 15 degrees isn't the max climb angle of the plane, it is =0Ajust th

My plans also say the caps are vented (upper left corner of 7V11. But they
also say to drill an 1/8th inch hole in the caps. Or just try leaving them
off.
Still seems odd though. After you lowered the nose did the flow restart?
That would show that no crud had blocked something.

Hi. I have a D180 also but I purchased the Dynon Pitot/static tube assy with it.
In your case, if you put the bend as shown by the black line. Are you then going
to cut the tube back so that there is only an inch or so of 45? Or, instead
of the bend as shown, you might put the bend an inch or so from the open end.
That would leave the two tube ends closer together. if you make it as shown
it looks kinda wild. But hey, why not,if it works.........Geoff

Thanks Doug. I'll retry the test that way
Craig - The fuel did start flowing again when the nose was lowered.
