Subject: | Fund Raiser List of Contributors - Please Make A Contribution |
Today!
Each year at the end of the List Fund Raiser, I post a message acknowledging everyone
that so generously made a Contribution to support the Lists. Its sort of
my way of publicly thanking everyone that took a minute to show their appreciation
for the Lists.
Won't you take a moment and assure that your name is on that List of Contributors
(LOC)? As a number of members have pointed out over the years, the List seems
at least - if not a whole lot more - valuable as a building/flying/recreating/entertainment
tool as your typical magazine subscription!
Please take minute and assure that your name is on this year's LOC! Show others
that you appreciate the Lists. Making a Contribution to support the Lists is
fast and easy using your Credit card or Paypal on the Secure Web Site:
http://www.matronics.com/contribution
or by dropping a personal check in the mail to:

I would like to thank everyone that has so generously made a Contribution thus
far in this year's List Fund Raiser! Remember that its YOUR support that keeps
these Lists going and improving! Don't forget to include a little comment about
how the Lists have helped you!
Best regards,

Been in a couple of arguements about the weight of a paint job on a 701.
Some say the the liquid evaporates and the resulting "skin" of paint is
very light - probably the ones who don't do another weight and balance *
after* painting and or installing the fire extinguisher, intercom,
entertainment center, extra radios, GPS, interior seats and trim.
Others state about 20 to 25 pounds of weight is added to a CH 701 type.
What have you personally seen and weighed on your plane. My 701 weighs 594
lb empty with no seats, trim etc..
I would do a class job with one coat of primer and a good top coat
of finish. Any guidance out there. Is there one system that is lighter and
or better etc.
Your valued thoughts on paint weight *vs* polishing with a minimal amount
of trim paint...please.

Subject: | Ordering Wing Kit Next Week |
Hi all,
I should be finished up with the tail kit by Christmas. I'm preparing to
order the wings c/w fuel system kit this week. I would appreciate feedback
on:
Is there any optional equipment I need to or should order with the wings,
(Lights, wiring etc.)
I'm planning on going with standard 2 x 10 gallon tanks as opposed to 40
gallon option.
Do I need to order the controls kit with the wings.
I'm planning on leaving the slats and flaperons to the last, maybe even
after the fuselage.
I'm not planning on bothering with folding wing option.
Thanks
Perry Delano

Hi Phil,
The question came up on my 601HDS and I did a W&B before paint and after.
The difference depends on the amount of prime you use and
The number of passes you make in the process. Using a water-base catalyzed
paint added near 10-lbs. to my bird. But the required a lot of passes to
get it to consistent color. I spent $2800 in all for equipment and paint.
Might have gone with an acrylic enamel as recommended by Bingelis in his
"Sport plane construction techniques" pages 340-. I have a page on painting
within my garage and the booth I built and the processes used to get it
done. It might discourage you or not, but try the link,
http://www.macsmachine.com/html/paint.htm. My journal also captures the day
to day processes and methods etc. This is for the guy that wants to do it
himself at home. Water base doesn't burn in exposure to flame, so it's
great there and it doesn't stink.
Be careful even if you use a "water base" catalyzed paint because it will
still try to kill you if you overload the booth without an exhaust fan.
I show a respirator with a fresh air system that you can add that worked
very well, after I'd forgot to turn on my fans. Had to sit up with the cat
late in the morning to find out if I would survive the mistake. You go to
bed feeling fine and 4 hours after painting, you wake up feeling as if
you're under water and can't come up. Air comes to you but doesn't absorb
well while the iso-cyanates are providing something like an anaphylactic
reaction. Do be careful!
You have any questions on what I did, just ask.
Fly safe,
Larry McFarland 601HDS at www.macsmachine.com

Get the lights and strobes. Install them now while you can. Also put in a
few access panels while you have the wing open.
If I were to build another 701, or a 750/801 I would seriously consider
using capacitive type fuel senders over the Zenith supplied units. Less
mess, mounted from the top, less change during steep nose attitudes.

One problem with capacitive probes is that they need to be calibrated with
the fuel type you are using: 100LL vs. unleaded. This can be a pain if you
vary your fuel type.
