I have a 601xl with a Jab 3300 and only use the fuel pump before
starting(turn it on for a few seconds, turn it off and start the plane). I
have 740 hours on my plane.

I also have no aux fuel pump. Have not had for over 5 years and 250 hours.
The plane was built to Zenith standards which at the time at least did not
show a need for it. Fuel flow has never been an issue even when hanging it
on the prop at full throttle (granted that is only done for a short period
since it makes me nervous.

some folks have more hours than this on their aircraft before bad habits

That's what's nice about living in America, so far, we can still do what we
want. You do want you want and I'll do what I want. I also believe the
owner of Jabiru USA does it this way. Don't consider it a "bad habit" at
all.
