Subject: | New 750 Cruiser?? |
Hey guys, have a look about halfway down the page in this blog, in the
section titled =93Visit to Zenair=94.
http://airdriebell.wordpress.com/
That=92s a cleaned up 750 that Zenith has built and has been testing. No
slats, long wing, streamlining over the cabin, and symmetrical horizontal
stabilizer. Note that it also has a fixed vertical stabilizer, like the
Savannah. It=92ll be like a larger Savannah, which is just what=92s needed
. I
reckon it=92ll go really well! It=92ll cruise faster for x-country, carry
a
good load, and still have enough STOL capability for real life short
fields. Shouldn=92t cost any more than the old 750, and even easier to
build, so will be great value for the home-builder. I sure hope they
follow through and put it in production!
Those are the same mods (except for the vert stab) that we=92ve proven so
well on Hans=92 701, and it goes great now! It=92s going to prove itself i
n
the next couple of weeks when we fly to Tasmania. When we last flew there
in 2006, Hans still had slats on his 701, while I had just removed the
slats from my Savannah. I had to throttle way back to stay with him on
that trip. At the first fuel stop, my aircraft took a lot less fuel than
his=85. Hans was recording the numbers on the pump, and we first thought
he=92d made a mistake, but every fuel stop after was the same. Over the
whole 50 hour trip I used $200 less fuel than he did.
As soon as we got home he removed his slats and lengthened his wings, and
since then he=92s also streamlined over the cabin and fitted a symmetrical
horiz stab, and now we=92re pretty much equal in performance.
We used to cruise at 5000rpm or less, but the Rotax experts are saying that
it=92s better for the engine at 5200rpm, so that=92s how we=92ll go on this
trip. At that power we go 86kts (99mph) when the aircraft are light. When
we=92re fully loaded up to 545kg (1200lb) for travelling, that speed goes
down to 80kts (92mph), at a fuel burn of 18 litres/hr (4.7usgal/hr). So
that=92s still 19.6 mpg, pretty good for such an aircraft at full load at
that speed. With the original 701 slats and short wings, when Hans was
loaded heavy, his fuel consumption was horrendous, but now it=92s much
improved. This time he=92ll save more like $300 at today=92s fuel prices.
Anyhow, I think all this experience indicates that this new 750 could be a
really great cruising aircraft, just what=92s needed I reckon. Once again,
I
sure hope they follow through and put it in production. Maybe need to
lobby Zenith to push for that.....
I spent last summer touring the western USA with a Kolb ultralight in a
trailer, and flew from 48 airfields in 14 states.
See the story at http://www.tailwindsplease.com/
I found the USA to be just the greatest place for touring in light
aircraft! Spectacular scenery in every direction, even better when seen
from the air, as you can see! And lots of good little friendly airfields,
most with pilot=92s lounges, and many with courtesy cars, makes it so easy
and convenient. I=92m envious as heck for the opportunities that you have
there=85..
Tailwinds Always,
JG

Thanks Chuck,
You may be right .We'll see. I basically traded the weight of the
slats for the wing extensions. I'm non electric so no battery. My
prop is a relatively light wood prop. My panel is very basic VFR. I
could go tubeless on the tires. If I go with minimal paint I might
come close to an empty weight of 600#. A safer guess might be 600 #
to 650 # since the little stuff does add up.
Thanks for the input!
Dave

Hi Guys
anyone know of information or a kit to install a starter on
an A65 continental..My friend has the A65 on his
701 and has to hand crank it to get it going..Makes
it a little difficult if it stops in flight..Also he is looking
for a used set of bubble doors for the same unit.
Any information would be appreciated

Hi Dave,
I have a Jab 2200 at about 140 pounds in my 701 for a dry weight of
570#. My 701 is very simple and before the SP version.- Getting a dry
weight of 600# with longer wings (not much weight there) and an A80
may be hard.

Subject: Zenith701801-List: Of Rudder Pedals and Brakes
From: Philip Smith <madriver42@gmail.com>
Ok 701ers,
Who has modified the rudder pedals so that your - read my - size 11
clod-hoppers don't interfere with the brakes when taking off or touching
down.
Its not a non starter, but I find that it is very easy to get a "little"
brake action while moving the pedals on takeoff and after landing if I am
not super careful. Basically, I have to consciously move the heels of my
shoes back so that only my tippy toes are on the rudder pedal bars. This
works better in the summer while wearing tennies but suffers in the winter
while wearing boots.
Thought about adjusting the brake part of the pedal arm fwd a little by
adjusting the clevis on the brake cylinder but not sure that this is
do-able. Right now my geometry is brake pedal aligned with the rudder pedal
ie straight up and down.
Also thought about making some sort of piece that would go on the "rudder
bar" part of the pedal to act as a spacer but this would shorten up an
already short leg room dimension.
Don't want to get into a major rebuild here just tossing it out for your
astute suggestions or a link to a previous discussion.

Hi Phil,
I had the same problem, and I solved it by changing my shoes. I got some
"sock
slippers" from LL Bean, and now can feel the rudder pedals and the brake
with
no problem.
They are wool socks with thin leather soles. I wear them all the time
now..........Fred

Phil, when I set up my brakes I had to run the clevis on the top of the bra
ke cyl down a fair bit to get comfortable geometry.- I then had to buzz t
he end of the threaded shaft off so there was no interference between the t
hreaded shaft and the mounting bolt.- Seem to remember it was fairly easy
