Subject: | Flat tire on landing |
Yesterday I went for a pleasant flight and landed at two airports before
heading home to my dirt/grass strip. I landed fine and continued
taxiing to my shop. The longer I taxied the more power I needed. I
knew right away that the tire must have gone flat but since it was only
a few feet to my shop I finished moving it before stopping. The tire
was totally flat but I think that if I had needed to, I could have taken
off and landed safely on the flat tire. Has anyone had to do this?
Because I have had trouble in the past removing the tire from the wheel,
I went to Harbor Fright and purchased a bead breaker for $49.99. This
was one of the best investments I have ever made. The tire was off the
rim if less than 5 minutes. In the past using just hand tools, I had
struggled for 3 hours to get the tire off the rim. Typically the
quality of tools from there is marginal but since I will only use this
once in a great while, it should last and at this price I could not resist.

Dan I too bought the bead breaker from HF. It came in very handy since my
local repair shop charged $25 to fix the first flat.
I did the second one and it is working fine.
I haven't tried to T.O. or land with the flat.
Do you have tubes or tubeless?
I had two flats with the tubes that came with the wheels from Zenith.
My shop ordered two new tubes for me and they seem to be much better. The
next time I get a flat I will convert to tubeless though.

Randel,
I have the tubeless tires that came
With my 701 kit-- pretty but I have to air them up about every 2 or 3 weeks.
Not much of a problem but i plan to put tubes in them the weather gets better.

For those who are having trouble with the Matco tubeless tires leaking air
at the split rim, I have found that if you coat the o-ring at the split in
the rim with spray lithium grease the leaks go away.- Might be worth spra
ying the o-rings the next time you have you wheels apart. =0A=0AWhen I firs
t installed the nose wheel on my 701 I had a slow leak which flattened the
tire over the course of a couple of weeks.- The spray grease on the o-rin
g fixed it right up.- After greasing all of my wheel o-rings I might put
a little air in my tires once a year (three frigid Canadian winters later).
