Subject: | Re: 701SP Bubble doors |
Thanks for your replys However the reported problem was not with the
latches.
The report from the pilot says The aircraft was performing gentle
manoeuvers at 100 mph when the pilot noted that both cabin doors were
bulging into the slipstream & almost instantly the left door fractured
and departed the airframe.
These were the latest type bubble doors with a composite frame.
Just enquiring if anyone else flying with these have had any problems or
are happy with them, as I have seen no reports on this list.

With more than 5 years (cant remember now) flying my 701 (about 300
hrs) and giving lots of rides... A few of them even without the doors.
I dont see any problem with the latching system of the 701 doors...
As in all aircraft: The Pilot (Captain) is responsible that the doors
are correctly closed and the passengers seat belted and advised (Sit
down, bucke up, dont touch, dont yell, dont complain:-) Before every
flight.
The big first diferences from driving and flying is the planning and
the check list(s)... I tell the parents of Young Eagles that learning
to fly makes responsible boys.

If you are worried about the 701 doors coming off in flight I would
recommend contacting Zenith and getting the latch kit for the 750. The
750 door is a bit larger and has three latch points as opposed to the
one on the 701.

Hi List
I see from a accident report in UK that a set of bubble doors broke up
in flight, is this an isolated incident or have I missed other reports?
as we have a set for the plane we are building but may now be banned
from fitting.

The only way that I have heard of the bubble doors failing in flight is if
the latch pops and-one opens up into the slipstream.- That is why I sug
gested supplementary latches as a potential solution (at least one which mi
ght pacify the UK authorities).- =0A=0AThe bubble shape of the door makes
it act like an airfoil in flight and it is common for the doors to flex ou
twards a bit at the back edge.- depending on how much material was trimme
d from the fiberglass frame during installation, it is possible that the do
or flexed enough for the main-latch bar to lose contact with the doorfram
e and the door pop open.- In the slipstream at 100 mph the door could eas
ily be ripped from the hinge or otherwise broken.- The pressure change fr
om one door popping could explain why the second door opened as well.- Wh
ile 100 mph doesn't sound like much, the VNE of the 701 is only 110 so real
ly the plane was at the top end of its performance envelope.=0A=0AAll of th
is, of course,-is idle speculation on my part.- All I know for sure is
after about 240 hours on my plane the only issue I have had with my bubble
doors has been the need for weather stripping as it gets pretty chilly here
in Canada in January.=0A=0ADoug M=0A=0A=0A=0AOn Sunday, March 2, 2014 7:20
