    From: "Chris Lewis" <christopherlewis@earthlink.net>
Just wanted to start a topic for those of us going this way. I'm waiting on my plans and am off to CC #13 in January to start my engine assembly. I've decided to switch over from my 110% 701 to take advantage of factory parts that I'm too busy/lazy/underskilled to build! I'm game... the wife gave her nod for a 750 corvair... Assessing my personal skills I can tell that while I will be able to build the engine 'from scratch', building the airframe from scratch is simply not something I should attempt. I admit it sounds very romantic (and cheap) but seriously, I would go bonkers cutting out endless numbers of ribs. I plan to conduct a hybrid build; scratch build a lot of the straight or flat parts and buy a lot of the curvy bits. That said, I am gathering data about what corvair engine I should be on the prowl for. I have rebuilt a couple of Jaguar engines and was always tuned into serial number ranges. Is it similar with the corvair engine? Should I be looking for a particular serial number range? Chris... I just browsed eBay and saw this... it is in Washington (Spokane) and local pick-up only or I might be trying for it... Is this the manual you are speaking of? Dave Converting Corvair Engines for Experimental Aircraft Manual The Corvair Flight Engine Conversion Manual by William Wynne, Part No. M-1, is the recognized bible of Corvair conversions. The Manual guides you through selection and purchase of core motors, which are readily available, to engine conversion, installation and engine systems. The 2005 edition contains three times more information than prior editions, as well as many photos, drawings and graphs. do not archive On Wed, Nov 5, 2008 at 10:04 PM, Brady <brady@magnificentmachine.com> wrote: > brady@magnificentmachine.com> > > Dave, > > That depends on several details. > What HP range are you after? > What are you going to fly it in? > A 750 I assume :) > > Do you have William Wynne's Corvair manual? > He goes into detail about what to look for in a core engine. > 1965 - 69 110 HP no smog or turbo engines will get you most of the way. > With this you will have most of the parts you will need to rebuild. > If you are seriously considering a Corvair you should Buy his manual. > It's full of info and is a fairly good read. > It goes into engine mount details as well as all the engine related stuff. > > You don't need to buy a whole car Just the engine. > Core engines are only worth about $200 if you can find one that turns. > Later models are preferable. > Earlier models are ok too but there is more work involved. > If you have trouble finding one in your area, let me know I have 20 or so. > > Take care, > > -------- > Brady McCormick > Poulsbo, WA > www.magnificentmachine.com > > > Read this topic online here: > > http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=212629#212629 > >

Dave, For $200 you can get a good core engine. This Ebay engine was in a crash! You will have to completely rebuilt the engine anyway. And likely replace most of the expensive parts. I really don't think it will put you ahead of the game. Be very careful. -------- Brady McCormick Poulsbo, WA www.magnificentmachine.com Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=212796#212796
