INSTALL A COLLECTOR TANK TO ACT AS A BUFFER FOR WHEN YOUR WING TANKS
UNCOVER (easily done with fuel low) engine keeps running. Best
insurance you ca buy.

What were your pre-first-flight fuel flow numbers at various fuel
levels and angles of attack?

On a training flight yesterday in a Zenith STOL 750 with an 0-200
engine we experienced a short stoppage of the engine while doing a
prolonged high angle of attack, power on stall. We had about half tanks
of fuel on board. Once the engine quit we lowered the nose and
immediately turned on the electric fuel pump. The engine came back to
life and the rest of the flight was uneventful. This phenomenon was not
experienced during the 40 hour flight testing period.
There is a placard advising that the "electric boost pump should be
used for takeoff and landing", however perhaps this should be changed to
say, " electric boost pump should be used during training maneuvers and
low level operations" or something like that.

Jim,
I have a slatless 0-200 powered 750, and use gravity flow, no pumps. I
checked the fuel flow at a 15 degree nose high attitude. The last 3
gallons drained in 11.75 minutes or a rate of 15.3 GPH. I have markings on
the jury struts that are level with the horizon at 15 degrees nose high.
The problem I had was making a nose low descent into a controlled airport
trying to keep up with other traffic. The engine quite. As I was flaring
to land off airport the engine caught. After landing back at the airport I
checked and had 5 gallons of fuel. So I did a test; in a 6 degree nose low
attitude there was 5.2 gallons unusable in the 24 gallon tanks. I added a
0.8 gallon header tank behind the pilots head to fix the problem. Many
certified high wing airplanes have fuel drains at the front and rear of the
tanks.

I've also had this happen, it's certainly something you need to be aware
can happen and keep your descent shallow when low on fuel. Having a
left/right/both/off fuel selector valve is helpful because you can choose
the fuller tank to land with, But the header tank solution is the best
solution, something I've had on my to-do list for a long time. I'd be
interested in more details of your tank installation. Thanks!
