Subject:   Compressor-Tool Bench
Description:

In an attempt to maximize every square inch of my shop, I decided that I couldn't have my compressor just sitting there occupying space. So, I decided to build a movable bench on top of it. This way the compressor could be accessed with ease and the bench could be used to hold my most used tools. Since the bench would be on wheels, I could easily move it anywhere in the garage without touching the compressor. The bench to houses my 2" belt sander, 16" bending brake, band saw and vise. Additionally, I built a Shop Vac garage in it to get it out of the way when not in used.

photo1.jpg Shows the compressor in its typical location.
photo2.jpg Shows the bench over the compressor with all the tools on it. Notice the wheels at the bottom of the bench. Although I am using a oil lubricated compressor, I decided that lowering the noise levels from it couldn't hurt. So, I enclosed it as shown on the picture with a pair of side panels and simple doors so that the pressure could be adjusted when needed. Heat was not a concern since the compressor runs intermittently, but I decided to allow a 6 inch reveal at the bottom of the bench to allow for ventilation. Additionally the back of the bench is open, so plenty of air is available.

Noticed that there is no cross member where the compressor is housed and I was worried that the lack of it would cause the bench to be somewhat flexible every time it needed to be moved. However, with the top in place and the 3/4 inch pieces surrounding the compressor, the entire bench is extremely stiff. I have moved it plenty times all over the garage and to some of my neighbors houses to work on their projects and I can't hear a squeak from it. Go ahead build one. You will soon wonder how you were without it for so long.
