Subject:   Zenith Zodiac 601XL Fuel Sender
Description:

Documentation for the VDO fuel quantity sender indicates that the unit should be installed vertically with the sender float arm extending in a horizontal plane at the half full fuel quantity indication. The Zodiac 601XL plans indicate that the fuel sender is to be installed horizontally. Some builders have opted to install the sender vertically while other builders have bent the float arm at an angle slightly more than 90° to compensate for the bend offsetting the center of rotation for the float arm. I have decided to use a later of the these two solutions.

Start with a 90° bend at 4.3 inches from the center of the float. Leave 1 inch of the float arm wire exposed on each side of the float arm clamp at the center axis of the sender unit. No modification were performed on the float limit stops. The bend angle can best be determined by holding the sender perpendicular to the tank side wall and along the back wall of the tank with the correct vertical offset as will be used when the sender is mounted in the tank. Then bend the float sender arm until the range of motion places the float ball at the top and bottom of the tank when the float arm is moved throughout the range of motion between the limit stops.
