Subject:   Excel Tools for drawing electrical schematics.
Description:

There are several tools in Excel that enhance the normal drawing capability but are not obvious. It would be nice if once you drew a schematic and wanted to move a shape, all of the connecting lines would move with it. In low and higher end flow-charting programs, this is pretty basic and applies well to a "on the cheap" schematic drawing program.

In Excel, there is an AutoShape Tool Bar and one of the options is "Flow Chart". If you choose that option, you can then pick shapes that have physical attachment points for various kinds of connecting lines. The only thing missing is how to connect them so they stay connected and that is not obvious.

If you go to the customize option that allows you to drag and drop tools onto one of your normal tool bars, you will see a whole list of various lines and connectors with arrows, plain lines, etc. Just take these and drop them on your tool bar and then click on the line and click on the attachment point of the shape you chose first and now you have a nice diagram where the lines will move with the shape. The line connectors in the red box are ones that I just pulled off the custom list and dropped on a normal tool bar so they would be handy.

I have attached a couple of screen shots showing where the tool bar is and where the custom line tools are. I also just threw a couple of shapes out and connected them as well to give you an idea. Once connected, you can move any of the shapes and the lines stay attached. The lines will have points where you can grab them and change corner locations or curves, etc.

Pix 1 Excel Diagram --- Just shows AutoShape Toolbar with Flow-Chart Shapes and sample diagram.

Pix 2 Excel Flow Tools ---- Just shows where the line connector tools come from on the customize menu.

Hope this helps.
