Subject: Idea for an Electric Pre-Heater... Description: Ran across a great idea at the Jabiru Website. If relates to cold start preparation. They showed some pictures of a nifty little pre-heater for use in cold weather. Basically you just place this thing under your cowl exit opening and pump warm air in for 15 minutes before flight. I ended up building one for my Zenith 601HDS in 3-4 hours for about $40. The Milkhouse heaters are available this time of year at most of the Farm Implement and larger Hardware stores. Same goes for the stove pipe hardware. Parts count is as follows:
Milkhouse Heater, 1500 Watt Electric
Pie Plate adapter with stovepipe hole in the middle
Round to Oval stovepipe adapter
Adjustable elbow adapter which provides a range of angles from 0 - 90 degrees
12 inch straight piece of Stove Pipe cut to length. As can be seen in the picture, the pie plate rivets nicely to the Heater with only minor mods. The elbow rivets directly to the pie plate with eight rivets set at a 45 degree angle. The straight piece of stove pipe connects the elbow to the Oval adapter using 4 rivets each. Cut this to the appropriate length so everything fits nicely together. Note that the oval shaped adapter is cut to clear the nosewheel strut and the U shaped doubler that runs along the bottom of the fuselage. This gives a custom fit appearance and ensures that all the heated air makes it into the cowling.
I'll breath a little easier breaking in my new Jab engine this winter with the use of a Pre-Heater. That straight 50w mineral oil is thick as honey when cold. Happy building everyone and be sure and check out Jabiru's website at: http://www.usjabiru.com Their Pre-Heater installation can be found under: Technical Tips, Pre-heating.
